An educational sign language interpreter works with deaf students to help them function and communicate in a mainstream classroom. 1. Minimum of AA Degree
2. Proficiency in English
3. Demonstration of a rating of 3.5 (average) or higher on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) and passing score on the EIPA written test.
4. Documented content knowledge in these areas: child development, language development, curriculum, teaching and tutoring methods, deafness and the educational process for children who are deaf and hard of hearing
Reports To:
SPED Director or designee Job Summary: Provide sign language interpreting to students who are deaf and hard of hearing to facilitate access to communication in compliance with the student's Individual Educational Program.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Educational Interpreters shall demonstrate the following:
a. Effectively applies knowledge about interpreting and interpreter processing; analyzing communication, for the speaker's intention, from an instructional and personal perspective.
b. Demonstrates knowledge about deafness in the educational process.
c. Demonstrates knowledge about meeting the needs of the student, in terms of audition and speech production.
d. Demonstrates effective consultation skills, collaborating with the Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and other team members. [Is familiar with and adheres to the Guidelines of Professional Conduct for Educational Interpreters (Schick & Williams, 2003), for procedures and ethics regarding professional conduct within the educational setting.]
e. Demonstrates knowledge about curriculum, teaching and tutoring methods, providing tutoring services under the direction of a licensed teacher.
f. Demonstrates knowledge about effective methods, techniques, and materials to assist educators with instruction.
g. Demonstrates knowledge related to affective needs and deafness.
h. Demonstrates content knowledge in these areas: child development, language development, deafness and the educational process for children who are deaf. Pikes Peak BOCES Job
2. Adhere to professional organization standards at national and state level.
3. Engage in professional development activities to support licensure requirements and/or professional goals.
4. Perform other duties as assigned.
Evaluation: This position shall be evaluated in accordance with board policy on personnel evaluations.
Salary, Working Time, Vacation, Etc.: This position shall be 1.0 FTE, 179 days per year or based on school calendar, with earned leave in accordance with Board policy. This position will be listed under Level 2 on the Alternate Certified/Noncertified Salary Schedule.
Working Conditions: - Talking and hearing, walking, standing or bending is frequently required - Reaching with hands and arms, climbing or balancing, stooping or kneeling is also required - The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds - Travel to assigned job site(s) requires driving. Employee may be asked to drive to any member or associate member district at any time using personal or BOCES vehicle. Reimbursement in accordance with board policy - All required license(s) must be maintained in an active status without suspension or revocation throughout employment. Any employee may be required to stay at or return to work during meetings and/or emergencies to perform duties specific to this classification or to perform other duties as requested in an assigned position. This may require working a non-traditional work schedule or working outside normal assigned duties during the meeting and/or emergency.
