Education Coordinator & Teaching Artist Job Description

FLSA Status/Category: Part-time, Hourly 

Reports to Director of Education

POSITION OVERVIEW

We are seeking an organized, collaborative, and passionate Part-Time Education Coordinator to support our growing educational programming. This role will assist with conservatory operations, teaching, curriculum support, and training initiatives while helping ensure a positive and enriching experience for students, families, and teaching artists. This role combines educational administration with direct teaching responsibilities. The ideal candidate is dependable, proactive, creative, and experienced in working with youth in performing arts education. This role plays a key part in creating a welcoming, organized, and high-quality educational experience for students and families across all San Pedro Playhouse education programs.

This position is based in San Antonio and requires consistent in-person attendance during scheduled hours.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Instruction & Teaching

• Teach After Class programs at partner schools.
• Lead two Conservatory classes each semester.
• Teach at least one camp per semester.
• Deliver high-quality, engaging, and age-appropriate arts education instruction that supports student growth and learning outcomes.

Program Administration & Operations

• Manage Conservatory payments, attendance, absences, and scheduling coordination.
• Support routine administrative and operational activities necessary for the successful delivery of educational programming.
• Maintain accurate program records and assist with program logistics, registration support, and communication needs.

Program Development & Educational Planning

• Assist the Director of Education with curriculum development, program evaluation, and educational planning.
• Contribute to the development and implementation of educational initiatives, class offerings, and instructional resources.
• Support continuous improvement efforts to ensure program quality and alignment with organizational goals.

Teaching Artist Leadership & Supervision

• Serve as the direct supervisor for Teaching Artists, overseeing onboarding, training, mentorship, classroom observations, performance evaluations, and ongoing professional development.
• Provide regular performance feedback, address performance concerns, and make recommendations regarding hiring, retention, promotion, and disciplinary actions in accordance with organizational policies.
• Foster a collaborative and supportive teaching environment that promotes instructional excellence and professional growth.
• This position carries day-to-day supervisory responsibilities for Teaching Artists but does not have independent authority to hire, terminate, or implement disciplinary action without approval from the Director of Education.

Family, Student & Community Engagement

• Maintain positive and professional communication with families, students, staff, teaching artists, and partner organizations.
• Serve as a representative of the organization and support positive relationships with educational and community partners.
• Address routine questions and concerns from families and stakeholders in a timely and professional manner.
  

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor’s degree in Theatre, Theatre Education, Performing Arts, Education, or a related field preferred. An equivalent combination of education and professional experience will be considered. Minimum of three (3) years of experience teaching theater, performing arts, or arts education programs for youth.

• Experience with curriculum planning or educational programming preferred
• Must possess reliable transportation and the ability to travel between San Pedro Playhouse facilities and partner school sites throughout San Antonio 
• Must have daytime availability, as well as availability for evenings and some weekends
• Proficiency with Google Workspace and the ability to learn education management and registration systems

PHYSICAL & WORK ENVIRONMENT EXPECTATIONS

• Ability to move throughout classrooms, rehearsal spaces, school sites, and theater facilities
• Ability to lift and transport basic classroom, camp, or program materials as needed
• Ability to actively supervise and engage with youth in classroom, rehearsal, and camp environments
• Ability to stand for extended periods, demonstrate movement activities, and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds of program materials and supplies. 

YOUTH SAFETY & WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Must successfully complete a background check prior to employment
• Must comply with all San Pedro Playhouse youth safety policies and procedures
• Must be committed to helping maintain a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for all students and families

SCHEDULE

This is a part-time position with a flexible schedule that may include:

• Daytime teaching and administrative hours
• Weekday after-school hours
• Occasional evenings and weekends
• Seasonal camp teaching responsibilities

This position is expected to work up to twenty-nine (29) hours per week. Weekly schedules may vary based on programmatic needs, including camps, conservatory sessions, and partner school programming. This position is classified as non-exempt and is eligible for overtime in accordance with applicable federal and state wage and hour laws. 

COMPENSATION

Pay is commensurate with experience and ranges from $17–$20 per hour.
