Position Summary
The University at Buffalo (UB) invites applications for the position of
Senior Counselor within the
Arthur O. Eve Educational Opportunity Program (EOP). The Senior Counselor provides extensive and proactive academic, personal, social, financial aid and career counseling for a student caseload of up to 150 students. The University at Buffalo's Educational Opportunity Program, provides admission and extensive support for talented students who have not yet reached their full academic potential due to barriers in the educational, economic, or personal background.
Key duties & responsibilities:
- Advises students on course selection from entering freshmen to graduation;
- Diagnoses skill strengths and weaknesses and develops academic and programmatic prescriptions;
- Reviews and documents student progress on a monthly and semester basis;
- Helps students understand and manage academic and social expectations and challenges;
- Assists students in resolving conflicts between personal values, abilities, and educational and career goals;
- Keeps students informed of all financial assistance, honors, recognition, scholarships, and other training or employment opportunities;
- Serves as a coordinator for specifically assigned student service support areas and as a liaison between EOP and designated faculties, and Schools.

Minimum Qualifications
- Masters degree with 1 year of experience in academic advising and/or counseling
- Experience in a higher education environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated knowledge of issues and factors affecting academically under-prepared students
- Demonstrated understanding of challenges impacting under-resourced and disadvantaged populations
- Experience providing academic advising and/or counseling to a diverse student population. under-prepared populations
- Knowledge of issues, concerns and obstacles affecting low-income and disadvantaged populations
