Description: Educational ASL Interpreter

Terms of Employment:  10 month employee - temporary for the school year

Position Description:
Capital School District is seeking a qualified Educational American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter to provide direct communication access for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. The interpreter serves as a communication bridge among students, teachers, peers, families, and school staff in educational settings.

Key Responsibilities:

• Interpret spoken English into ASL and ASL into spoken English during classroom instruction, discussions, activities, meetings, and school events
• Provide interpreting services during IEP meetings, parent conferences, and other school-related meetings
• Review instructional materials and specialized vocabulary to support accurate interpreting
• Promote students' full access to academic and social opportunities
• Collaborate professionally with teachers and school staff while maintaining appropriate role boundaries
• Follow professional interpreting ethics, confidentiality requirements, district policies, and student educational plans

Minimum Qualifications:

• Native or near-native proficiency in ASL and strong English-language skills
• Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university
• Must hold or be eligible for the Delaware Department of Education Permit for an Interpreter/Tutor for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
• Required national certification through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or applicable EIPA credentialing in accordance with Delaware requirements
• Educational interpreting or school-based experience preferred
• Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and professional skills
• Reliable, flexible, and able to adapt to varied educational environments
• Successful completion of all required criminal background checks, fingerprinting, child protection clearances, and other pre-employment requirements
