Will AI replace EDI jobs?

EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) specialists perform tasks involving the setup, management, and troubleshooting of electronic data exchanges between systems. While AI can automate some routine processes, EDI roles typically require human oversight, technical knowledge, and problem-solving skills that are not easily replaced by automation. Therefore, EDI jobs are likely to evolve with technology rather than be fully replaced in the near term.

What are some common challenges faced during EDI implementation, and how can I prepare for them in this role?

One of the primary challenges in EDI implementation is integrating new EDI systems with existing business processes and legacy software, which often requires troubleshooting compatibility issues and close coordination with IT and business stakeholders. You may also encounter varying EDI standards and protocols between trading partners, making strong communication and problem-solving skills essential. To prepare, familiarize yourself with common EDI standards (like ANSI X12 or EDIFACT), and be ready to collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure smooth data exchanges and resolve any technical roadblocks that arise during onboarding new partners.

What career paths are available in EDI?

Careers in EDI implementation include roles such as EDI Analyst, EDI Developer, Integration Specialist, and EDI Project Manager. These positions often require knowledge of EDI standards, scripting, and integration tools, with opportunities for advancement into IT management or specialized consulting roles.

How much do EDI consultants make in the US?

EDI consultants in the US typically earn between $70,000 and $120,000 annually, depending on experience, certifications, and location. Senior professionals with specialized skills in EDI standards and integration tools can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $130,000. Compensation may also include benefits such as bonuses and professional development opportunities.

What is EDI implementation?

EDI implementation involves setting up electronic data interchange systems to enable the secure and standardized exchange of business documents between organizations. It requires understanding EDI standards, configuring software, and testing data flows to ensure seamless communication. EDI specialists often work with supply chain, logistics, and IT teams to support efficient business operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an EDI Implementation Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an EDI Implementation Specialist, you need strong knowledge of Electronic Data Interchange standards, data mapping, and business process analysis, often backed by a degree in IT or a related field. Familiarity with EDI software (such as Sterling Integrator or Gentran), understanding of communication protocols (like AS2, FTP, or VAN), and sometimes certifications in EDI or supply chain are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication with clients and technical teams set top professionals apart. These skills ensure accurate data integration, smooth partner onboarding, and efficient troubleshooting, which are crucial for seamless business operations.

What You'll Do:

This role partners closely with business teams including Customer Operations, Order to Cash, logistics, banks, and Procure to Pay solutions to onboard new customers and trading partners while also serving as a key Level 2 escalation point for production incidents. The Specialist works directly with managed services vendors to ensure timely resolution of operational issues, reliable document flows, and successful execution of onboarding and migration activities.

Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

  • Execute technical configuration tasks across OpenText Trading Grid and Seeburger BIS, including map validation, routing changes, partner profiles, and connectivity setup.
  • Serve as Level 2 escalation for production issues-performing log analysis, identifying root causes, validating transactions, and coordinating with managed services teams for resolution.
  • Troubleshoot EDI document issues across O2C, P2P, logistics, and finance flows, including schema errors, failed acknowledgements, and integration failures.
  • Manage AS2/SFTP certificates, keys, and endpoints to maintain secure and reliable connectivity.
  • Validate mapping outputs, enveloping structures, partner-specific requirements, and backend integration behavior.

Delivery & Architecture

  • Ensure accurate development, validation, and deployment of EDI document flows (850, 855, 856, 810, 820, etc.) aligned with ERP (ECC/S4), WMS, financial institutions, and Supply Chain systems.
  • Support customer and trading partner onboarding, working directly with business teams to gather requirements, coordinate testing, manage readiness, and validate cutovers.
  • Execute technical tasks for partner migrations into the new Watersowned OpenText platform, including testing cycles, connectivity changes, and transaction validation.
  • Participate in defining and maintaining reusable mapping assets, onboarding templates, connectivity checklists, and technical documentation.
  • Assist with regression testing, partner certification testing, and UAT activities during migration waves.
  • Work closely with ERP, WMS, and Supply Chain teams to ensure that downstream system integrations behave correctly after changes or partner onboarding.

Leadership & Strategy

  • Act as the operational point of contact between business teams, external partners, and managed services providers during customer onboarding and incident escalations.
  • Proactively identify recurring issues and contribute recommendations to reduce transaction failures, improve partner onboarding quality, and strengthen process consistency.
  • Participate in continuousimprovement initiatives, helping refine onboarding processes, testing frameworks, documentation quality, and exception management practices.
  • Provide clear and timely communication to stakeholders regarding incident status, onboarding progress, risks, and required decisions.
  • Support the Manager in ensuring vendor teams meet operational SLAs, response times, and quality standards.
Qualifications
  • 8+ years of handson experience in B2B/EDI implementation, onboarding, and technical operations.
  • Experience working directly with customers or trading partners on onboarding, certification, and technical troubleshooting.
  • Skilled in diagnosing and resolving PunchOut connectivity, catalog, and sessionhandling issues.
  • Strong understanding of EDI standards (ANSI X12, EDIFACT), cXML, and documents (850, 855, 856, 810, 820, etc.).
  • Hands-on experience with OpenText, Seeburger, or similar B2B/EDI platforms.
  • Strong Level 2 troubleshooting skills: log analysis, trace reading, error interpretation, and message validation.
  • Familiarity with AS2, SFTP, and VAN protocols.
  • Proficient with XML/JSON tools, EDI validation tools, and enterprise ticketing systems (e.g., Jira, ServiceNow).
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work cross-functionally with business and technical teams.

Preferred
