While both roles work in critical care settings, Ecmo Specialists focus specifically on managing ECMO machines for patients with severe cardiac or respiratory failure, requiring specialized certifications. Respiratory Therapists provide broader respiratory care, including ventilator management and patient assessment. The roles often collaborate but differ in scope and certification requirements.
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a life support technique that helps people maintain heart and lung functions during critical care. The responsibilities of an ECMO specialist involve managing the ECMO system while it is in use. You help plan respiratory care and work with nurses and physicians to test the patient’s functions. Your other duties include monitoring the patient and making adjustments if needed. If an assessment reveals the need for alterations or troubleshooting, you implement changes. This job also requires interacting with the family of a patient to provide insights and education into the ECMO process.
