Job description

Summary

Description

Assistant Professor of Medieval/Early Modern Mediterranean History

The Department of History at the College of the Holy Cross invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in the history of the Mediterranean world, with a chronological focus in either the medieval or early modern period, to begin in August 2027. This is an entry-level tenure track position for recent Ph.D.'s who have not yet served in a tenure-track capacity. We particularly welcome applicants focusing on transregional exchanges or conflicts across Mediterranean spaces, broadly defined. Candidates will be expected to teach introductory courses in medieval and early modern history, updating our current catalog offerings within that timeframe and including at least some courses focusing on Europe. Candidates will also have the opportunity to self-design courses according to their own interests and areas of expertise and to participate in teaching a required methods class to majors. We seek applicants who will bring originality to the classroom and develop synergies with colleagues in the Department of History and in other departments and interdisciplinary programs across the College. Finally, we expect that the candidate's overall teaching will contribute to History's Global Themes curriculum.

This position carries a 3-2 teaching load with a research leave prior to tenure review of either a full year at 80% salary or a semester at full salary, and generous sabbatical and fellowship leaves for tenured faculty. To enable a smooth transition to Holy Cross, new full-time tenure-track Assistant Professors receive start-up funding to support their research and professional development and have a one-course reduction in their first year of teaching (i.e., 2-2). This position offers full benefits and a starting salary of $102,500.

In alignment with the strategic plans for Holy Cross and the division of Academic Affairs, we view academic excellence and inclusive excellence as inextricably linked. Our faculty combine high-impact scholarship and outstanding teaching with a deep commitment to inclusive excellence. They generate new knowledge in their fields while utilizing evidence-based teaching strategies and course designs to create classroom environments where all students have a sense of belonging, are valued, and can flourish to reach their full potential. Academic freedom is a cornerstone of our intellectual and moral community; the College is committed to supporting faculty and students as they work to advance our educational mission and serve the common good.

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must demonstrate excellence in scholarship and undergraduate teaching as well as a commitment to inclusive pedagogies. Ph.D. required by the beginning of the appointment.

A statement of your teaching philosophy and interests, with particular emphasis on how you utilize evidence-based teaching strategies to foster inclusive, high-belonging classroom environments.

For applicants who may require visa sponsorship: The College supports new faculty in pursuing an appropriate visa or other immigration status consistent with their qualifications and the responsibilities of the position. Because several pathways may be available, the College works with candidates who are offered positions to determine the most appropriate option. Please note, however, the College does not support H1-B visa petitions that are subject to the payment of an additional $100,000 fee.
