What is a driver safety awareness program?

A Driver Safety Awareness Program is an organized initiative designed to educate drivers about safe driving practices, reduce risky behaviors, and prevent accidents on the road. These programs typically cover topics such as defensive driving, the dangers of distracted or impaired driving, and vehicle maintenance. They may be offered by employers, government agencies, or safety organizations and often include workshops, training sessions, and assessments. The goal is to promote a culture of safety and responsibility among drivers to protect themselves and others.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a driver safety awareness program coordinator?

To thrive as a Driver Safety Awareness Program Coordinator, you need expertise in traffic safety regulations, program development, and adult education, often supported by a background in safety management or a related field. Familiarity with data analysis tools, learning management systems, and certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or National Safety Council credentials are commonly used. Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills help in effectively educating drivers and promoting a safety culture. These competencies ensure the program's success in reducing accidents, improving compliance, and fostering safer driving behaviors.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals running a driver safety awareness program, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals managing a Driver Safety Awareness Program often encounter challenges such as engaging participants, keeping training materials up-to-date with the latest regulations, and measuring the effectiveness of the program. To address these, it's helpful to use interactive training methods, regularly review and update content, and implement clear metrics to track safety improvements and participant progress. Collaboration with HR, fleet managers, and external safety experts also enhances program outcomes and ensures best practices are followed.

Job description

Company Description

QQR Logistics and QQR Transport keep critical freight moving for supply chains that can't afford to stop. QQR brings disciplined execution to complex supply chains across automotive, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, aerospace, energy, and other key industries — throughout North America and across major U.S.–Canada and U.S.–Mexico cross-border lanes.

This role is with QQR Transport, an asset-based carrier that operates its own fleet, running full-truckload (FTL) freight in dry van, bulk, and open deck modalities. QQR Transport is building its dispatch and operations team in Cincinnati, Ohio and looking for experienced logistics professionals that are ready to grow their careers.

Compensation

An individual candidate's placement within a range will be based on relevant work experience, demonstrated skills, and applicable education or professional training. The total compensation range for this position is $60,000 to $80,000 including salary and performance bonus.

Job Overview

QQR Transport is seeking a highly motivated and experienced CDL Driver Safety Manager to lead our driver safety and regulatory compliance program. This role is ideal for a transportation safety professional who understands that a strong fleet is built on disciplined compliance, proactive risk management, and a genuine culture of safety. You will own DOT and FMCSA compliance, safety policy, driver training and coaching, accident investigation, and the metrics that keep our CSA scores and insurability strong — partnering closely with recruiting, dispatch, and operations to keep drivers and the public safe.

Key Responsibilities

Regulatory Compliance

  • Own day-to-day DOT and FMCSA compliance, including Hours-of-Service (HOS), ELD usage, and the Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse
  • Maintain and audit driver qualification files (DQFs), MVRs, medical certifications, and other required compliance documentation
  • Monitor the company's CSA/SMS BASIC percentiles monthly across all seven categories and drive corrective action on any category trending toward an intervention threshold
  • Prepare the company for DOT compliance reviews and roadside audits, and manage the company's response to any FMCSA data requests
  • Oversee the drug and alcohol testing program (pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion) in compliance with federal requirements
  • Keep safety policies and driver handbooks current as FMCSA and DOT regulations change

Safety Program & Risk Management

  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve company-wide safety programs and policies
  • Conduct internal safety audits, investigations, and root-cause analysis, and manage corrective action plans
  • Manage accident and incident reporting, claims coordination, and interface with insurance carriers on claims and policy renewals
  • Monitor telematics/ELD data (hard braking, speeding, harsh cornering, HOS violations) to identify at-risk driving behavior before it becomes an incident
  • Review DVIRs and coordinate with maintenance vendors to ensure vehicles meet safety and inspection standards
  • Track and reduce preventable accident frequency and severity through proactive risk management

Driver Engagement, Training & Coaching

  • Deliver new-driver safety orientation and ongoing safety training and education programs
  • Conduct one-on-one coaching for drivers flagged by telematics, MVR changes, or safety events
  • Lead regular safety meetings and communicate safety campaigns, bulletins, and regulatory updates to drivers
  • Conduct or coordinate driver safety road tests as part of onboarding and periodic evaluation
  • Build and expand QQR Driver Appreciation and Awards Program with the entire QQR team and work closely with QQR Driver Recruiter to support long term retention, ongoing driver safety training and awards recognition events

Reporting & Collaboration

  • Generate regular safety and compliance reports (CSA BASIC trends, accident/incident summaries, DQF audit status) for executive leadership
  • Partner with the driver recruiting team to ensure new hires meet DOT/company qualification standards before onboarding
  • Work collaboratively with dispatch and operations to balance safety requirements with service commitments
  • Recommend process improvements that strengthen compliance, reduce risk, and lower total cost of claims and insurance

Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Experience conducting driver safety road tests
  • 5+ years of OTR, regional, or local driving experience
  • 2+ years of transportation safety, compliance, or fleet management experience
  • Subject-matter expertise in FMCSA, DOT, Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse, CSA/BASIC scoring, and Hours-of-Service regulations
  • Experience with safety audits, accident investigations, and claims management
  • Experience with ELD/telematics platforms, Highway, driver qualification files, and other compliance systems
  • Excellent communication, coaching, and relationship-building skills
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities; able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience operating a TMS platform
  • Terminal management experience
  • NATMI or CDS safety certification
  • Experience interfacing directly with insurance carriers on claims and underwriting
  • Bilingual is a plus

What Success Looks Like

Within your first 12 months, you will strengthen DOT and FMCSA compliance, keep CSA BASIC percentiles below intervention thresholds, reduce preventable accidents through stronger coaching and risk management, and build audit-ready driver qualification files and safety documentation that support the company's growth.
