What is a driver recruiter?

Driver recruiters are professionals responsible for sourcing, interviewing, and hiring qualified truck drivers for transportation and logistics companies. They manage the entire recruitment process, from advertising job openings to conducting background checks and ensuring compliance with industry regulations. Driver recruiters play a key role in maintaining a company's fleet by ensuring that there are enough qualified drivers to meet operational demands.

What does a driver recruiter do?

A driver recruiter seeks prospective drivers for an employer to optimize the hiring process and meet employment needs. In this career, you follow leads to pre-qualify individuals for a position and screen them before they formally apply for an opportunity. Some manufacturing businesses have a human resources employee on staff that fills this role, especially in situations with a high turnover rate or variable trucking needs throughout the year. You can also find work with a flexible employment agency. You must handle the necessary employment paperwork for the recruit and ensure compliance with federal trucking regulations. You also educate candidates about the details of the job to ensure that it is a good fit for both parties.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a driver recruiter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Driver Recruiter, you need strong knowledge of recruitment processes, DOT regulations, and the transportation industry, often supported by experience in HR or logistics. Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (ATS), background screening tools, and CRM software is commonly required. Exceptional communication, relationship-building, and organizational skills help recruiters connect with candidates and manage multiple hiring pipelines. These capabilities ensure efficient hiring of qualified drivers, compliance with industry standards, and contribute to the overall success of transportation operations.

What are some common challenges driver recruiters face when sourcing qualified candidates, and how can they be addressed?

Driver Recruiters often encounter challenges such as high competition for experienced drivers, fluctuating hiring demands, and ensuring candidates meet regulatory requirements. Addressing these challenges involves building strong relationships with driving schools, leveraging digital recruitment platforms, and maintaining an up-to-date understanding of industry regulations. Additionally, successful recruiters regularly communicate with operations managers to understand evolving needs, and they develop engaging job postings to attract top talent. Consistent follow-up and clear communication with candidates also help streamline the hiring process.

Job description

Charger Logistics Inc. is an asset-based, cross-border carrier operating across the US, Canada, and Mexico. With a growing fleet and an expanding network of terminals, we're looking for a Driver Recruiter who knows how to find great CDL drivers, build real relationships with them, and keep our trucks moving.

As a Driver Recruiter, you'll own the full recruitment cycle for CDL drivers - from sourcing and screening through onboarding. You'll be the first point of contact for drivers considering a career with Charger, and often the relationship they trust most throughout their time with us. This is a high-volume, fast-paced role for someone who thrives on connecting with people and closing out hires.

Job Duties:

  • Manage full-cycle recruitment for CDL drivers across assigned lanes and terminals
  • Source candidates through job boards (Indeed, Craigslist, internal ATS), cold calling, text/SMS outreach, and past-applicant databases
  • Screen candidates: review MVR, PSP, and Clearinghouse records, verify employment history, confirm CDL/endorsements
  • Conduct interviews to assess fit, experience, and driver expectations
  • Coordinate drug screens, background checks, and road tests with compliance/safety teams
  • Guide candidates through onboarding - offer details, pay structure, dispatch handoff, and start-date logistics
  • Build lasting relationships with drivers post-hire to support retention and address early concerns
  • Track requisition pipelines and hiring metrics across multiple open roles simultaneously
  • Monitor competitor postings and market pay rates (e.g., NFI, Central Transport, Comprehensive Logistics, Centerline Drivers) to stay competitive in sourcing

Requirements

  • 3 to 5 years in safety & training (transportation industry preferred)
  • Previous experience in driver training, recruitment and safety & compliance is an asset.
  • Experience hiring drivers out of different states within the US is a must.
  • Safety driven with expertise in HOS, DOT regulations, and driver welfare
  • At least three years of truck driving experience is considered an asset.
  • Must have solid understanding of the trucking industry.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Benefits

  • Asset-based carrier with a stable, growing network across the US, Canada, and Mexico
  • Collaborative team environment with dedicated safety, compliance, and dispatch support
  • Opportunity to make a real impact on driver experience and retention
  • Competitive compensation and growth opportunities within a scaling organization
