Scope of Responsibility:

Reporting directly to the VP of Engineering, the Drafting Manager provides both strategic and operational leadership to the Drafting Department, ensuring the accuracy, efficiency, and on-time delivery of all design documentation. This role not only oversees departmental performance but also drives continuous improvement initiatives and ensures drafting operations stay aligned with company goals and expectations. The Drafting Manager works closely with project management, engineering, fabrication, and field service teams,

Essential Duties:

  • Manage departmental productivity, quality, and resource allocation to meet manufacturing needs and client expectations.
  • Monitor and improve key quality metrics; ensure timely corrective actions and drive process improvements.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Engineering, Production, and Project Management to enhance manufacturability, workflow efficiency, and overall drawing quality.
  • Represent the Drafting Department in leadership and client meetings; clearly communicate goals, progress, and key updates.
  • Identify continuous improvement opportunities and partner with the CI Manager to implement effective solutions.
  • Lead workforce planning, coaching, and talent development, building clear career paths and ensuring succession readiness within the department.
  • Stay current with industry technologies, detailing software updates, and digital fabrication innovations to guide future departmental capability.
  • Develop and execute long-term departmental strategies focused on performance growth, scalability, and team development.
  • Foster an engaged, collaborative work environment built on teamwork, accountability, and mutual respect.

Position Requirements:

Education: Construction or CI Management, Drafting Technology, or related field.

Bachelor's degree in Engineering(preferred),

Experience:

  • 5+ years of structural steel detailing experience.

3+ years team leadership with continuous improvement experience in design, manufacturing Knowledge and experience with 3D design and applications (Inventor Preferred).

Strong understanding of lean/continuous improvement concepts, principles and practices.

Knowledge of principals involved in production of technical plans, drawings, and models.

Experience with leading and training a team.

Must be detail oriented with ability to drive results.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Proficiency in structural steel detailing software (Inventor).
  • Understanding of steel detailing and fabrication
  • Strong communication, and team-building abilities.
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy and quality.
  • Office-based with occasional visits to fabrication shops or job sites.
  • Collaboration with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced project environment.
  • Accuracy and completeness of shop drawings.
  • Timeliness of deliverables.
  • Reduction of drawing-related fabrication/erection issues.
  • Team performance, development, and retention.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to perform work in any environment and various weather conditions such as rain, sleet, snow and extreme cold and heat.
  • Must be able to regularly use hands to grasp, pinch or pull materials.
  • Must be able to feel and reach with hands and arms.
  • Must frequently stand, walk, stoop, kneel or crouch.
  • Must be able to climb in and out of equipment.
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 lbs., frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to pass the commercial driver's vision test requirements.
