What does a Django developer do?

A Django Developer is a software engineer who specializes in building web applications using the Django framework, which is based on the Python programming language. Their responsibilities typically include developing server-side logic, designing and maintaining databases, creating APIs, and ensuring the performance and scalability of web applications. Django Developers often collaborate with front-end developers, designers, and other team members to deliver robust and secure web platforms. They are also responsible for writing clean, reusable code and adhering to best practices in web development.

What does a Django developer do?

As a Django developer, your job is to program applications for clients using the Django framework for the Python programming language. In this role, you may help select the resources for each project, oversee development, troubleshoot problems, and test existing code. Many Django developers also integrate data storage solutions and user-facing elements while fulfilling their duties and responsibilities. Jobs in this field are often advertised as Python developer positions because Django is only a framework, so you may need to search for the broader term to find all positions for which you qualify. Many details of this job vary by employer, so the more programming skills you have, the more likely you are to qualify for any Django developer position.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Django developer?

To excel as a Django Developer, you need a strong command of Python, web development fundamentals, and proficiency with the Django framework, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with relational databases (like PostgreSQL or MySQL), version control systems (such as Git), and deployment tools is essential, and certifications in Python or Django can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help developers collaborate and deliver robust solutions efficiently. These skills and qualities are crucial for building secure, scalable web applications and adapting to evolving project requirements.

What are some common challenges Django developers face when working on large-scale projects?

Django Developers working on large-scale projects often encounter challenges such as managing complex database migrations, ensuring code scalability, and optimizing application performance under heavy user loads. Collaboration with front-end teams and DevOps engineers is crucial to ensure seamless integration and deployment. Staying up to date with Django's evolving framework and best practices also helps in addressing these challenges effectively.

Job description

About Swoop:
Swoop Technologies has a mission to organize and make accessible the world's military and critical infrastructure. We are building a distributed operating system, SwoopOS, that decomposes the world's equipment into a distributed robotic embodiment upon which a new generation of distributed systems, autonomous systems, and agentic AI can be built and deployed using our SDK, Valhalla, and operated via our browser, Surf. Imagine the world's equipment - consisting of the electrical grid, communications architectures, manufacturing facilities, and militaries as a trapped supply of inputs possessing the potential to ensure Western military advantage, sovereign control of economically competitive manufacturing capacity, or the creation of a grid that fosters energy dominance. Swoop is liberating these trapped assets, allowing them to contribute to the world's future as a series of building blocks to be combined at the speed of software, limited by only the hard constraints of physics and the soft constraints of safety. That is what Swoop is building. Not in the data center or cloud or edge on-premise computing node. In the physical world. This is a hybrid position that requires someone based in Minneapolis/St. Paul OR Washington, DC who can work in-office 3+ days per week
Impact:
Swoop's operating system challenges many paradigms defining a scalable API. Management, security, and interoperability each will be re-imagined in how Swoop's OS exposes interfaces to inputs and outputs within the stack. You will have a role developing APIs that Swoop developers leverage to build user-facing applications running on the Swoop platform. These APIs will be further leveraged and exposed to 3rd parties to develop an ecosystem of novel applications running on the Swoop OS.
What You'll Do:
  • Develop and build new services and features, working closely internally with our firmware team to interface with the SwoopOS, our frontend team to support our web application, and our infrastructure team to deliver a stable product to market.
  • Design and build SDK's for internal and external use, working with 3rd parties as they develop applications to run on our OS.
  • Author new Python packages for common functionality used across multiple services.
  • Ensure our services have strong availability and service level agreements across our code base, especially as it pertains to the runtime of our Kubernetes cluster in production.
  • Tune data storage configurations to optimize for scale and near real-time availability in a streaming architecture.

You Should Have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technical field, or equivalent technical experience
  • 3+ yrs in backend software development writing scalable code and/or modern APIs structured from databases and distributed data sources
  • Proficient Python coding ability with good understanding of data structures and data models
  • Experience with Kubernetes in a production environment
  • Understanding of basic software security standards
  • Active US Security clearance or ability and willingness to be sponsored for a US Security clearance
  • Travel Requirement - 5-20%

Bonus if you have:
  • Experience with one or more of the following: async Python, Django, PostgreSQL, Solr, Rust
  • Experience handling multimedia data structures

Swoop Technologies is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, gender identity or any other factor protected by applicable federal, state, or local laws.
