JOB SUMMARY
The position involves performing a variety of semiskilled and skilled maintenance and construction work for roadways, storm drainage and other public works facilities and systems.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Operates single axle dump trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various materials or equipment.
  • Operates dump truck with a snowplow and salt/cinder spreader in the removal of ice and snow.
  • Maintains a variety of records relating to materials hauled, work performed, job location, hours worked, etc.
  • Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement patching, ditch digging, shoveling, jack hammering, chain sawing, and other physical labor necessary.
  • Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tolls by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.
  • Performs routine inspections and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment.
  • Operates light and medium-sized construction and power equipment, such as air compressor, brush chipper, chain saw, jackhammer, or mechanized broom.
  • Performs all duties in accordance with safety policies and procedures.
  • Assists in the training of new or lower-level employees to increase their skills and promote safety in the maintenance and construction of roads and storm drainage facilities.
  • Places traffic control devices and perform duties as a flagger for work zone traffic control in compliance with the County's standards and guidelines.
  • Performs some work as part of the County's Emergency Operations Plan.
  • Performs work at assigned location during specified business hours.
  • Performs related additional duties as required and assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of experience in the operation of a dump truck or any other commercial vehicle.
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses or Certifications:
  • Must possess a valid Class E Driver's license with no restrictions except corrective lens. The ability to obtain either a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License within 9 months. Training to obtain a Commercial Driver's License will be provided during the initial period of employment. Class B Commercial Driver's License preferred.

Special Requirements:
  • Work schedule is many times determined by weather conditions; workdays can be long and strenuous without scheduled days off for extended periods; starting times are varied and cannot be set by employee.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities.
  • Skill in the operation of some of the listed tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work safely.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to work whenever necessary.
  • Ability to operate motorized vehicles and equipment, including dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, tamper, plate compactor, saws, pumps, compressors, sanders, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, mobile radio, phone.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is heavy and requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or 50 pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. The work also requires mental and visual acuity, speaking, balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling; picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand; grasping; picking, holding, or otherwise working with the whole hand; hearing, kneeling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, standing, stooping, talking, and walking.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is performed outdoors a majority of the time, in various weather conditions of below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and humid conditions, with direct sunlight exposure and through rough undeveloped terrain conditions at various proposed or ongoing developments. There is a possibility of bodily injury when working with heavy equipment, confined spaces or cramped body positions, working near large moving equipment, on uneven or slippery surfaces, in darkness or dim light. Individuals in this position will be exposed to a wide variety of noxious air, odor, smoke, toxic substances, asbestos, or free silica, and dust. Some work situations may take place near electrical or water hazards. This position involves interaction with other employees and the general public and work pace is self-determined.
