Work Schedule: 12-Month Position or 10-Month Position depending on the availability of the candidate
Work Hours: 6:30 a.m. 3:00 p.m.
Starting Pay: $16.83 $17.33 per hour, based on applicable experience and placement

Position Summary
Lafayette School Corporation is seeking a dependable, organized, and service-oriented Transportation Dispatch Assistant to support the daily operations of the Transportation Department. The primary responsibility of this position is to serve as a central communication and dispatch resource for bus drivers, bus aides, schools, families, transportation staff, and district administrators. The Dispatch Assistant may also be required to sub drive on occasion.
The Transportation Dispatch Assistant plays an important role in maintaining safe, efficient, and reliable student transportation by monitoring daily operations, responding to changing transportation needs, communicating timely information, maintaining accurate records, and providing administrative support to the Transportation Department.
The existing transportation position description emphasizes accurate recordkeeping, communication, reports, correspondence, transportation calls, emergency substitute coordination, accident documentation, vehicle records, and support for extracurricular transportation.
Essential Responsibilities
The Transportation Dispatch Assistant will:
  • Serve as a primary point of communication between the Transportation Department, bus drivers, bus aides, schools, parents/guardians, and district personnel.
  • Monitor daily bus operations and communicate route delays, mechanical problems, student concerns, emergencies, and other operational issues to appropriate personnel.
  • Receive and respond to transportation radio, telephone, electronic, and other communications in a professional and timely manner.
  • Relay information between drivers and schools or families when transportation-related communication is necessary.
  • Assist with securing substitute drivers and bus aides when regular employees are absent or emergency coverage is required.
  • Maintain current information regarding driver, aide, bus, route, and substitute availability.
  • Assist transportation leadership with adjustments necessitated by employee absences, vehicle breakdowns, weather, traffic conditions, accidents, or other unexpected circumstances.
  • Contact appropriate emergency, maintenance, towing, administrative, or other support personnel when needed.
  • Maintain accurate daily dispatch logs and transportation records.
  • Assist with documentation related to accidents, incidents, driver reports, vehicle repairs, fuel usage, and transportation operations.
  • Provide administrative support, including preparing correspondence, maintaining files, entering data, compiling reports, and responding to telephone and electronic inquiries.
  • Assist with vehicle assignments and scheduling for field trips, extracurricular activities, and other district transportation needs as assigned.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student, employee, and district information.
  • Provide courteous and responsive customer service when working with employees, schools, families, and community members.
  • Communicate urgent or significant transportation concerns promptly to the Director of Transportation or other appropriate administrator.
  • Work collaboratively with transportation office staff, drivers, bus aides, mechanics, school personnel, and district administration.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation.

Qualifications
Required:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Commercial Drivers License, class B with Passenger, School Bus & Air Brake endorsements. *If you do not have a CDL we would expect you to obtain one within 6 months from the start of your employment*
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate calmly, clearly, and professionally in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational, recordkeeping, data-entry, and general office skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and respond effectively to changing circumstances.
  • Ability to use computers, telephone systems, two-way radio/dispatch communications, email, and standard office applications.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling student, employee, and operational information.
  • Dependable attendance and punctuality.

Preferred:
  • Previous experience in transportation, dispatch, school operations, customer service, logistics, or an office-professional position.
  • Familiarity with K 12 student transportation operations.
  • Experience with transportation routing, student information, scheduling, or dispatch software.

The existing position description identifies communication, prioritization, report preparation, typing, filing, recordkeeping, and operation of office and transportation communication equipment as important skills for the position.
