Job Description: Radio DispatcherQualifications:
  • High school diploma
  • Valid Louisiana driverโ€™s license
  • Minimum of 21 years of age
Job Summary: Assumes responsibility for independent judgement and takes responsibility for answering phones for both emergency and non-emergency calls, monitors multiple radio frequencies and performs computer data entry and inquiry. This person is the first, First Responder to the publicโ€™s emergency and the first contact with law enforcement, fire, medical or others.
General Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Answers emergency and non-emergency phone calls while simultaneously entering the information into the computer aided dispatch (CAD) system.
  • Monitors all radio channels on radio equipment and is responsible for the professional operations of equipment. Professional operations should include proper radio etiquette, approved radio terminology, a professional attitude, and accurate, timely information provided to emergency personnel.
  • Provides all pertinent information to responding units.
  • Determines priority and coordinates level of response to maintain the safety of the caller and the emergency responders.
  • Maintains contact, or has the ability to resume contact, with callers while dispatching calls to appropriate law enforcement, EMS, or fire personnel.
  • Receives, interprets, and processes information from law enforcement officials, EMS personnel or fire personnel.
  • Performs inquiries on vehicle registrations, driverโ€™s licenses, wanted persons, criminal history information, and other transactions.
  • Effectively communicates with employees, citizens, and other law enforcement, fire and emergency medical agencies in order to discuss requests for service and provide information regarding possible criminal activities, fire or other emergency medical functions and responsibilities. Employees will work with other departments and agencies in exchanging information or requesting assistance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Ability to handle a high stress level of dealing with some emotional and possible irate contacts within the general public.
  • Ability to organize time efficiently.
  • Ability to work effectively with others.
