What is a Discord Server job?

A Discord Server job involves managing and moderating a community on the Discord platform. Responsibilities may include setting up channels, enforcing rules, engaging with members, and handling bots or integrations. Some roles focus on administration, while others emphasize community engagement, content creation, or tech support. The position is common in gaming, business, and online communities to ensure smooth communication and user experience.

Can you get paid for having a Discord server?

A Discord server owner can generate income through monetization methods such as paid memberships, server subscriptions, or offering exclusive content. However, Discord's terms of service prohibit using the platform solely for commercial purposes without proper compliance, and earning potential depends on the server's size, engagement, and monetization strategies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Discord Server position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Discord Server Moderator or Community Manager, you need strong community management skills, familiarity with online communication platforms, and the ability to enforce server policies. Experience with Discord's moderation tools, bots, and basic understanding of server settings is typically required. Excellent interpersonal skills, patience, and conflict resolution abilities help you engage members and handle sensitive situations effectively. These skills are vital to foster a positive, safe, and active server community environment.

What are some common challenges faced by Discord Server Moderators or Community Managers?

Discord Server Moderators and Community Managers often encounter challenges such as mediating disputes between members, curbing spam or inappropriate content, and keeping engagement levels high. They may also need to adapt quickly to changes in server activity, especially during events or rapid member growth. Balancing enforcement of rules with maintaining a welcoming atmosphere requires patience and sound judgment. However, these experiences also help moderators develop valuable skills in digital communication, conflict resolution, and community leadership.

This role combines people leadership with hands-on technical expertise: you'll manage and develop a team of specialists while personally serving as the technical expert on our most complex integrations.

This will start as a player-coach role ideal for someone with deep experience in game development, particularly multiplayer, who wants to build and lead a high-performing team while staying close to the technical work. This role is expected to evolve into a management-only role as the team scales.

Who Is A Good Fit

You may be a good fit for this opportunity if you come from roles within the Gaming ecosystem like:

  • Solutions Engineering Manager
  • Solutions Architect Manager
  • Partner Engineering Manager
  • Technical Partnerships / Account Manager
  • Developer Relations Manager
  • Developer Experience Manager

Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership

  • Manage, mentor, and develop a team of Integration (Social SDK, new emerging products) and Community (Official Server optimization) Specialists, setting clear goals aligned with department objectives
  • Drive continuous improvement across the team through regular retrospectives and feedback
  • Identify growth opportunities and create developmental assignments that expand team capabilities
  • Collaborate with cross-functional leadership to ensure team focus aligns with broader company initiatives

Technical Leadership

  • Serve as the subject matter expert for technically complex integrations
  • Establish systems, tools and automations that evolve the managed white glove service of today into at-scale, repeatable processes.
  • Lead technical discovery sessions and architectural reviews for customer implementations
  • Provide expert guidance on best practices for integrating Discord's Social SDK and enabling commerce in diverse game genres, engines and platforms
  • Translate complex business requirements into technical implementation plans
  • Contribute to product roadmap decisions based on customer feedback and technical insights

Customer Partnership

  • Own solution architecture for Discord's most technically challenging AAA managed accounts
  • Build trusted advisor relationships with senior technical stakeholders at partner studios
  • Develop strategies for your team's portfolio of developers to maximize the value of Discord's developer and Community tools
  • Prepare and deliver technical updates to stakeholders on integration progress and milestones

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner closely with Sales, Product, and Engineering teams to drive successful customer outcomes
  • Contribute to sales enablement through technical documentation, reference architectures, and case studies
  • Inform product and cross-functional leadership on operational aspects of customer integrations

Requirements

  • Experience managing a team, with a demonstrated ability to develop talent and drive team performance
  • Technical background in game development
  • Direct experience working within a game studio or game ecosystem provider
  • Ability to read, understand, and discuss code across multiple languages
  • Familiarity with game engines (such as Unity, Unreal, proprietary), platforms, and development toolchains
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for varied audiences
  • Track record of building relationships with technical and non-technical stakeholders

Nice to Have

  • Proficiency in Korean or other languages (Mandarin, Japanese)
  • Experience as a Solutions Engineer, Solutions Architect, Technical Account Manager, or similar customer-facing technical role
  • Experience with gamedev focused developer platforms or SDK integrations
  • Background in developer relations or developer experience
  • Familiarity with Discord Communities

What Success Looks Like

In this role, you'll be successful when your team is delivering high-quality integration support, your developers are seeing measurable improvements in player outcomes through Discord's tools, and you're recognized internally as the go-to expert for our most demanding customer engagements.
