Is disaster engineering a good career?

Disaster engineering is a specialized field focused on designing systems and infrastructure to withstand natural and man-made disasters. It requires knowledge of structural analysis, risk assessment, and often involves working with emergency response agencies, making it a valuable and impactful career for those interested in safety and resilience. Job prospects depend on industry demand, geographic location, and relevant certifications such as FEMA or structural engineering licenses.

What are some common challenges disaster engineers face in their day-to-day work?

Disaster Engineers often encounter rapidly changing situations that require quick decision-making, such as analyzing the structural integrity of buildings after an earthquake or coordinating mitigation plans amid unpredictable weather. Balancing technical solutions with available resources and timelines adds complexity to their work, as does the need to communicate findings to both technical experts and non-technical stakeholders. Collaboration with emergency response teams, government agencies, and community members is frequent, requiring flexibility and strong interpersonal skills. These challenges make the role dynamic and impactful, offering opportunities to develop innovative solutions that safeguard communities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in disaster engineering, and why are they important?

Thriving as a Disaster Engineer requires expertise in civil or structural engineering, risk assessment, and disaster mitigation, typically backed by a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with GIS software, modeling tools like HAZUS, and certifications such as Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) are often expected. Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork abilities are vital for collaborating with emergency management professionals and conveying complex information to diverse audiences. These skills are crucial for designing resilient infrastructure, planning effective disaster responses, and ensuring public safety under pressure.

Job Description:
Disaster Recovery Engineer
Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Partial Remote)
Employment Type: Contract
Role Overview
The Disaster Recovery Engineer will join an established Disaster Recovery Engineering program within a large healthcare enterprise. This role is designed for a highly technical infrastructure engineer with real-world disaster recovery exposure. The position focuses on infrastructure-first disaster recovery, ensuring core services are recoverable before clinical applications can function. The engineer will assess, plan, and remediate disaster recovery strategies and work with various teams to evaluate readiness and participate in DR testing.
Key Responsibilities
  • Assess, plan, and create disaster recovery plans to scale the program.
  • Support DR planning and execution for foundational infrastructure services, including Active Directory, network services (DNS, DHCP), and virtualization platforms.
  • Participate in enterprise evaluations of disaster recovery readiness and help identify gaps, risks, and single points of failure.
  • Contribute to remediation plans and work with platform SMEs to improve recoverability.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining DR documentation, including runbooks and recovery procedures.
  • Participate in DR testing activities, including failover/failback exercises and tabletop simulations.
  • Provide hands-on support during incident response or recovery events.
  • Work alongside infrastructure, networking, and security teams to align recovery approaches.
Required Qualifications
Experience: 3-5+ years of experience in infrastructure engineering, site reliability, or a disaster recovery-adjacent role. Practical experience with disaster recovery or resiliency planning for enterprise infrastructure in large-scale, cross-functional environments is required.
Technical Skills: Experience with multiple infrastructure domains is required, including Active Directory, networking services, and VMware or other virtualization platforms. Knowledge of backup tools such as Dell Avamar, PowerProtect Data Manager (PPDM), Rubrik, or Cohesity is necessary. An understanding of RTO, RPO, and business continuity concepts is expected.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in healthcare, hospital systems, or other regulated industries.
  • Exposure to business continuity planning, DR testing, or Disaster Impacts Model (DIMs) experience.
  • Cybersecurity exposure, including firewall technologies and security-related infrastructure dependencies.
  • Certification such as CBCP (Certified Business Continuity Professional) or CFCP (Certified Functional Continuity Professional).
