Emissions and OBD Validation Manager
Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI), is the design, technology and engineering arm for all North American models of the Korea-based Hyundai Motor Group. The electrified propulsion performance test (ePPT) team is one of the groups in the electrified propulsion development division of HATCI responsible for providing quality, testing, validation and technical support for all types of vehicle propulsion systems.
We are looking for a talented, passionate and motivated Engineering Manager responsible for leading the gasoline engine emissions and OBD validation team in Superior Township, Michigan. This group supports the Hyundai, Genesis and Kia brands with technical expertise in development and validation of vehicle emissions and onboard diagnostics. This position reports to the senior manager of ePPT.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
  • Lead and manage the Emissions and OBD Validation team to execute validation activities for pre-production vehicles undergoing mileage accumulation and emissions durability testing
  • Set team goals and objectives aligned with department strategy, and drive engagement, execution, and results.
  • Manage team resources, budget, and validation plans to support business priorities and program timing.
  • Assign engineering tasks to direct reports and manage employee performance, including coaching, feedback, performance evaluations, and actions to improve individual and team effectiveness.
  • Hire, develop, mentor, and grow engineering talent to maintain strong emissions, OBD, and calibration expertise for US market products.
  • Support department resource planning, goal setting, and technology roadmap development for future propulsion systems.
  • Lead the local gasoline engine emissions and OBD validation fleet program for new product development.
  • Direct data-intensive fleet vehicle analysis efforts to identify early warning signs of component or system failures, enabling proactive issue detection and resolution during development.
  • Lead investigation and resolution of emissions, OBD, and quality issues for conventional and hybrid vehicles, including in-use audit concerns and root cause analysis.
  • Lead calibration and validation of selected gasoline engine OBD features and support development of calibration and hardware improvements.
  • Provide technical support for engine management and OBD systems to North American assembly plants and cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Report project status, milestones, and key issues to management in the US and abroad, and deliver executive-level presentations on major updates and team achievements.
  • Create and deliver executive-level presentations summarizing key project milestones, validation results, quality issues, technical recommendations, and team accomplishments.
  • Drive continuous improvement of team methods, tools, and engineering capabilities to strengthen validation efficiency, data-driven decision-making, and overall technical excellence.
  • Travel both domestically and internationally (up to 15%)

WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO THE ROLE
  • Educational Requirements:
    • B.S. in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or related engineering field from an accredited university
  • Related Industry Experience Requirements:
    • 10+ years of automotive engineering experience
    • 8+ years of gasoline engine calibration, emissions or OBD development experience
    • 3+ years of project leadership/management experience leading engineers and technicians
  • Required Skills and Knowledge:
    • Demonstrated foundational knowledge of ICE system principles and operation, especially emissions control and OBD
    • A proven track record of delivering engineering projects related to vehicle OBD/emissions calibration, testing, validation, or certification
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills and an ability to clearly explain deeply technical topics to both technical and non-technical collaborators and leadership
    • Ability to develop and maintain working relationships with international technical experts
    • Experience with model-based development tools such as MATLAB/Simulink
    • Working knowledge of vehicle communication networks (CAN, LIN, Ethernet, etc.)
    • Working knowledge of vehicle instrumentation including ETAS hardware and software
  • Additional Requirements:
    • M.S. or Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or related engineering field
    • 2+ years of direct engineering team leadership experience
    • Familiarity with fleet vehicle instrumentation and cloud-based data acquisition
    • Experience in data analytics and visualizing large vehicle datasets, including in statistical programming languages such as R or Python
