Director Subcontracting information

What does a director subcontracting do?

A Director of Subcontracting is responsible for overseeing all aspects of subcontract management within an organization. This includes developing strategies for sourcing and negotiating contracts with vendors, ensuring compliance with regulations, and managing relationships with subcontractors. They often work closely with legal, procurement, and project management teams to ensure that subcontracted work aligns with company goals and standards. Their role is critical in optimizing costs, mitigating risks, and ensuring quality performance from external partners.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a director subcontracting?

To thrive as a Director of Subcontracting, you need in-depth knowledge of contract management, procurement processes, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in business or a related field. Proficiency with contract lifecycle management (CLM) software, ERP systems, and certifications like CPCM or CPSM are often required. Strong negotiation, leadership, and interpersonal skills help you build effective relationships with vendors and internal stakeholders. These skills ensure risk mitigation, cost control, and successful execution of complex subcontracting strategies.

What are some common challenges faced by a director subcontracting when managing multiple subcontractors on large-scale projects?

A Director of Subcontracting often faces challenges such as ensuring consistent compliance with contract terms across diverse subcontractors, managing risk exposure, and maintaining clear communication between all parties. Coordinating schedules, deliverables, and quality standards can become complex, especially when subcontractors have varying levels of capability or are located in different regions. Proactively building strong relationships, implementing robust tracking systems, and fostering a culture of transparency are key strategies for overcoming these challenges and delivering successful project outcomes.

Job description

Bedminster, New Jersey | Houston, Texas | Phoenix, Arizona | Scottsdale, Arizona

DEPCOM Power is seeking a Director of Subcontracts Management to lead the transformation of our Subcontracts capability from a transactional function into a core capability that reliably delivers on our EHS, quality, cost, and schedule commitments and creates competitive advantage through preferred partnerships. This position will be physically based out of our headquarters in Scottsdale, AZ and offers an opportunity for a hybrid work schedule.

This is a construction-first leadership role. We are looking for a leader with deep, hands‑on construction and EPC experience - someone who understands how work is actually bid, sequenced, and built in the field and can use that judgment to challenge scopes, hold subcontractors accountable, and drive predictable, value‑focused outcomes across our renewable energy portfolio. Equally important, this is a people‑leadership role: you will build, develop, and scale a high‑performing subcontracts team and mature the capability itself - the processes, standards, measures, and talent - so it delivers reliably as our portfolio grows.

Our Team

The Director of Subcontracts will lead DEPCOM’s Subcontracts capability within the broader Supply Chain organization, partnering closely with the rest of the capabilities. This role operates in a fast‑paced EPC environment where construction judgment, sound economic thinking, and strategic partnership directly influence portfolio execution.

At DEPCOM Power, we design, build, and operate some of the largest and most efficient solar and energy storage plants for leading utilities and asset owners. As part of Koch Engineered Solutions, we apply Principle Based Management empowering every team member to contribute, take ownership, and be all that they can be.

What You Will Do
  • Set and drive the vision. Develop and share the Subcontracts vision and the actions needed to achieve it, so your team, regional business leaders, and capability leaders engage you as a strategic partner.
  • Build and lead the team. Attract, develop, and retain a high‑performing subcontracts team; make sure every person understands their roles, responsibilities, and expectations (RREs) and their top development areas; give honest, timely feedback; and address performance and role fit directly and with urgency.
  • Identify and close talent gaps. Identify talent and resource needs early, raise them, and build the bench and succession the capability needs to scale with the portfolio.
  • Build preferred partnerships. Establish preferred partnerships with subcontractors built on mutual benefit, aligned incentives, and shared accountability that create competitive advantage through reliability and cost efficiency.
  • Lead disciplined subcontractor selection. Select subcontractors based on EHS performance and the ability to deliver within cost, quality, and schedule commitments, using a disciplined levelized bid‑review process and aligning final selection with regional business leaders. Ensure subcontracts are executed timely and within budget, with agreements aligned to EPC scope and terms.
  • Apply construction expertise. Bring field‑tested construction judgment to scope definition, means and methods, sequencing, and productivity assumptions
  • Hold subcontractors accountable. Drive accountability for subcontractor work; minimize and rigorously challenge change orders through better upfront contracting and disciplined contract documentation. Track EHS, quality, schedule, and change‑order performance, and address issues early and directly with subcontractors.
  • Build knowledge and measures. Understand what “good” looks like elsewhere, create measures that tell you what is working, and use both to drive decisions.
Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)
  • Construction experience which may include field, site, construction, or subcontract management -in civil, electrical, structural, and/or heavy industrial construction or EPC environments
  • Experience leading subcontracts or subcontract management, including the selection, negotiation, and execution of subcontract agreements (MSAs and project‑level agreements)
  • Experience managing subcontractor performance, change orders, and claims or dispute resolution on active construction projects
  • Experience leading and developing a team
  • Experience reading, writing, and negotiating multi‑year contracts and pricing arrangements
  • Willing and able to travel up to 50% of the time as business needs permit
What Will Put You Ahead (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Utility‑scale solar or renewable energy EPC construction experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or a related field.
  • Experience driving self‑perform vs. subcontract strategy across a portfolio of projects.
  • Experience building preferred‑partner or strategic sourcing programs with construction subcontractors.
  • Exposure to construction software platforms such as Procore, Textura, Vista, or similar
  • Experience partnering with cross functional capabilities on portfolio deal structures, standards, and execution
