Position Summary
Artheon is seeking a Director of Structural Engineering to lead and grow our structural engineering practice across New Jersey. This is a strategic leadership role responsible for overseeing technical excellence, business development, project delivery, staff development, and the continued expansion of our structural engineering capabilities.
The Director will work closely with executive leadership and other practice leaders to develop new client relationships, strengthen existing partnerships, and deliver high-quality structural engineering solutions for transportation, municipal infrastructure, buildings, and other public-sector projects. This individual will serve as both a technical leader and trusted advisor while helping shape the future direction of the firm's structural engineering practice.
This role oversees a team of 12+ structural and geotechnical engineers.
Reports to: Vice President of Technical Services
Leadership & Practice Growth
  • Lead and manage the structural engineering practice, including strategic planning, staffing, financial performance, and business development.
  • Develop and execute growth strategies aligned with the firm's long-term business objectives.
  • Build and maintain relationships with public agencies, municipalities, county governments, state DOTs, and private-sector clients.
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities while supporting proposal development and client presentations.
  • Collaborate with leadership across transportation, municipal, water resources, construction management, and other disciplines to pursue multidisciplinary projects.
Technical Leadership
  • Provide technical oversight and quality assurance for structural engineering projects.
  • Serve as Engineer of Record on complex structural projects when appropriate.
  • Establish engineering standards, best practices, and quality control procedures across the structural team.
  • Guide engineering teams through project planning, design, permitting, and construction support.
  • Review engineering calculations, reports, plans, specifications, and contract documents.
Project & Client Management
  • Oversee multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring quality, schedule, budget, and client satisfaction objectives are achieved.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for key clients and stakeholders.
  • Support project managers in resolving technical challenges and managing project risk.
  • Participate in project planning, resource allocation, and financial forecasting.
Team Development
  • Recruit, mentor, and develop structural engineering staff at all experience levels.
  • Foster a collaborative, high-performance team environment focused on technical excellence and professional growth.
  • Support employee career development, performance management, and succession planning.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (structural emphasis) or Structural Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required; New Jersey PE preferred or the ability to obtain through reciprocity.
  • 15+ years of progressive structural engineering experience in a consulting engineering environment.
  • 4+ years of team leadership and project management experience.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex structural engineering projects from proposal through construction.
  • Strong understanding of applicable structural design codes and industry standards.
  • Proven experience developing client relationships and generating new business.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
Preferred
  • Experience with municipal, transportation, bridge, waterfront, infrastructure, and vertical building projects for public and private sector clients.
  • Existing relationships with New Jersey public agencies, counties, municipalities, or transportation clients.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Familiarity with project management and financial management software.
The base salary range for this role is indicated in the posting. This range reflects the company's good faith estimate of the compensation for this position at the time of posting. Final compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, internal equity, and geographic location.
