Job description

Ready to Build Software That Actually Runs the Operation?
Join CRST as a Software Engineer I and work at the intersection of technology and operations - on-site in Fort Wayne, IN, where your code directly powers logistics, customer onboarding, and day-to-day execution. If you're a hands-on engineer who thrives working close to the business, translates complex requirements into clean solutions, and takes real ownership of what you build, this role is built for you.
How You'll Work
  • Location: On-site in Fort Wayne, IN (hybrid flexibility may be considered based on project needs)
  • Compensation: Competitive salary commensurate with experience
  • Benefits: Comprehensive package including medical, dental, and vision coverage; prescription drug and telemedicine services; company-paid life and disability insurance; retirement savings with company match; paid time off, holidays, and parental leave; plus additional voluntary benefits and employee discounts
  • Additional Compensation: Total compensation may also include other forms of pay such as discretionary incentives, as applicable

About the Role
CRST's technology team plays a direct role in enabling how we operate, onboard customers, and scale the business. As Software Engineer I, you'll serve as an on-site development partner - working alongside operations teams and customers to build and support the applications that keep things moving. From customer onboarding enhancements to logistics and inventory tools, your work will have immediate, visible impact.
This role sits at the center of both new development and operational support, with the opportunity to reduce friction caused by offshore handoffs by being a responsive, in-the-room technical resource.
What You'll Do
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain applications using Java, Spring Boot, SQL, Angular, and Android technologies
  • Serve as an on-site development partner for operations teams and customers, translating requirements into working solutions
  • Support customer onboarding by quickly addressing data mapping changes, system enhancements, and issue resolution
  • Enhance and maintain operational tools, including barcode scanner applications and other logistics and inventory systems
  • Participate in daily project and operational meetings, providing real-time technical input
  • Collaborate with offshore and distributed development teams, ensuring clear requirements, code quality, and timely delivery
  • Support development tied to new revenue programs and business opportunities
  • Follow established development standards, security guidelines, and best practices

What Great Looks Like
  • Comfortable working directly with non-technical stakeholders and translating business needs into clean, scalable solutions
  • Strong hands-on engineer who takes ownership - not just of code, but of outcomes
  • Communicates clearly and shows up as a reliable partner to the teams you support
  • Thrives in a fast-paced environment where priorities shift and quick, quality solutions matter
  • Genuinely enjoys being close to the work - on-site, in the room, part of the operation

What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 2+ years of professional software development experience
  • Strong hands-on experience with Java, Spring Boot, SQL/relational databases, Angular, and Android application development
  • Experience developing and supporting enterprise or operational systems
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a customer-focused mindset
  • Ability and willingness to work on-site in Fort Wayne, IN

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in Agile development environments
  • Experience collaborating with offshore or distributed development teams
  • Experience in transportation, logistics, or similarly operations-intensive industries

Why CRST?
CRST is celebrating 70 years of grit, growth, and forward momentum - a legacy built on safety, integrity, and delivering on our commitments. Our engineers play a direct role in how we operate, scale, and serve our customers.
At CRST, you'll do work that matters, backed by a company that values operational excellence, strong partnerships, and long-term success.
Core Values
  • Safety at the Core of All We Do
  • Integrity in Every Decision and Action
  • Commitment to the Success of Employees, Customers, Agents, Contractors, and Communities
