The Art Director leads the development of creative concepts and visual storytelling that bring campaigns and initiatives to life, while also providing strong people leadership for a small team of designers. Success in this role means shaping ideas into powerful narratives expressed across digital, print, and experiential platforms, and guiding designers to do their best work through mentorship, feedback, and creative direction. This position requires a highly conceptual thinker with strong design sensibility who can inspire and develop talent, foster collaboration, and elevate creative output. The Art Director serves as both a creative leader and storyteller-ensuring design is not only visually compelling, but strategically aligned, culturally relevant, consistent with the American Cancer Society brand, and impactful for audiences.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Createsoriginal concepts and visual narratives in partnership with copywriters and creative leadership, developing campaign ideas that reinforce and elevate the American Cancer Society brand through cohesive, strategically grounded storytelling across all channels.(35%)

  • Directsthe design(both static and motion)and execution of assets across digital, print, and experiential touchpoints, ensuring every deliverable not only meets creative excellence but strengthens brand consistency, brand recognition, and the integrity of ACS's visual identity.(20%)

  • Manages and developsa small team of designers, providing ongoing coaching, feedback, and mentorship to grow skills, elevate craft, and strengthen fluency in brand systems, visual standards, and storytelling.(15%)

  • Collaborateswith marketing, communications, and project management partners to bring the brand strategy to life, aligning creative direction with organizational priorities and ensuring a unified, brandfirst approach across campaigns and initiatives.(10%)

  • Presentscreative work and strategic rationale to senior leaders and stakeholders, clearly articulating how concepts express brand voice, visual identity, and narrative intent whileadvocating forsolutions that strengthen ACS's brand presence.(10%)

  • Ensuresall creative outputs adhere to brand guidelines, visual systems, accessibility standards, technical specifications, timelines, and budgets-protecting brand consistency and elevating the quality of brand expression across platforms.(5%)

  • Exploresemerging trends, technologies, and cultural insights through a brand lens, bringing forward ideas that keep the ACS brand modern, relevant, and culturally resonant while advancing creative innovation.(5%)

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education:Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Digital Media, or related field (or equivalent professional experience).

  • Preferred Degree:Bachelor's degree in Digital Design, Advertising, or related field.

  • Certificate(s) or License(s): Nonerequired; certifications in UX/UI, motion graphics, or leadership traininga plus.

  • 7-10 years in an agency, design studio, or in-house creative environment, with a portfolioshowcasinghigh-level concept development, multi-channelcampaignsand execution.

  • Expertisein Adobe Creative Suite and familiarity with design collaboration tools (Figma, Sketch, etc.).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY:

  • Strong conceptual thinking with the ability to translate strategy into compelling visual ideas.

  • Excellent design sense, with mastery of typography, layout, and brand systems.

  • Skilled in storytelling through design across multiple media (digital, print, experiential).

  • Strong leadership and collaboration skills, with experience mentoring junior designers.

  • Ability to give and receive feedback in a respectful, proactive, and constructive way.

  • Knowledge of emerging design trends, technologies, and cultural insights.

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills to oversee multiple projects.

  • Curious, problem-solving mindset with accountability for delivering creative excellence.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

The starting rate is $80,000 to $102,000 annual. The final candidate's relevant experience/skills will be considered before an offer is extended. Actual starting pay will vary based on non-discriminatory factors including, but not limited to, geographic location, experience, skills, specialty, and education.
