Job Summary:

The Director - Fleet Operations will develop and implement Ferguson's strategic fleet, material handling equipment, driver safety, and transportation operations vision in close collaboration with field management, sourcing, logistics, and executive leadership. This is a high-impact leadership role requiring a high-potential leader with strong executive presence, proven influence skills, and the ability inspire change across a complex, field-led organization. The role is responsible for optimizing customer delivery services, cost management, asset performance, personnel development, fleet function administration, and regulatory compliance.

As a senior leader, you will directly lead a team of managers while influencing cross-functional partners and field leaders to drive continuous operational improvement, accelerate technology adoption, and maintain high standards of safety, compliance, service, and efficiency.

You will provide direct leadership, coaching, and strategic direction to three key functional areas:

  • Fleet Management: Strategic vision, over-the-road asset lifecycle, vendor negotiations, procurement, and financial optimization.
  • Forklift Management: Warehouse material handling equipment (MHE) optimization, utilization tracking, maintenance, and safety.
  • Driver Safety: Standard operating procedures, DOT compliance, training, and accident prevention.

Location:

This role will be based out of Ferguson's corporate offices in Newport News, VA. Candidates applying from outside of the Hampton Roads area must be open to relocation. Relocation assistance will be provided.

Core Responsibilities:

Strategic Fleet & Forklift Management

  • Develop specifications and RFP packages, obtain cost estimates, evaluate proposals, and select vendors for road vehicles, forklifts, and trailers.
  • Oversee the lifecycle, deployment, and utilization metrics of all warehouse material handling equipment (MHE) alongside traditional fleet assets.
  • Monitor contract compliance and lead senior relationships with equipment suppliers, OEMs, and maintenance vendors.
  • Track and analyze Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and equipment exception reports to optimize asset performance, minimize warehouse downtime, and guide selection.
  • Assess and implement outsourcing options, including fleet/MHE leasing, third-party maintenance programs, and fuel/energy management cards.
  • Determine when to outsource asset management versus keeping operations in-house based on vendor pricing and regional capability.

Operational Project, Influence & Change Leadership

  • Lead, direct, and implement key large-scale projects across people, process, and technology, including safety cameras, telematics, analytics, operating standards, and other enterprise fleet capabilities.
  • Influence, partnership, collaboration is critical with all leadership, regional operators, cross-functional partners, and senior collaborators to align around priorities, remove barriers, and sustain adoption of new processes and technologies.
  • Serve as a visible change leader who can translate strategy into action, build trust with frontline teams, and guide the organization through ambiguity, resistance, and evolving business needs.
  • Implement strategies, policies, metrics, and practices that support cost reductions and warehouse/delivery service improvements.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop fleet, warehouse, and supply chain personnel while building leadership capability, accountability, and succession depth across the team.
  • Own and implement a robust ESG strategy that meets our fields needs to service the customer while decreasing our carbon footprint.

Regulatory Compliance and Safety

  • Ensure strict corporate and field adherence to all regulatory and legal compliance guidelines for warehouse operations and transportation.

  • Oversee mandatory program compliance including FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, IRP, IFTA, CARB, and Form 2290.
  • Develop a culture of zero-incident compliance and risk mitigation across all regional warehouse and fleet operations.

Qualifications:

  • Leadership Profile: High-potential enterprise leader with demonstrated ability to influence without direct authority, lead through complexity, inspire teams, and deliver measurable change across a decentralized operating model.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Supply Chain, Logistics, or Business required; MBA or advanced degree is highly preferred.
  • Experience: 8+ years of supply chain leadership experience, explicitly including 5+ years of fleet/MHE industry experience and vendor management.
  • Methodologies: Lean Six Sigma experience and prior Project Management experience are preferred.
  • Change Management: Demonstrated success leading organizations through operational change, technology rollouts, process standardization, vendor transitions, and behavior adoption across large, distributed teams.
  • Influence and Executive Presence: Strong communication and partner management skills with the ability to build alignment, challenge constructively, and influence leaders at all levels of the organization.
  • Network: Industry partnership and networking expertise to recruit new high-performing asset, delivery, and service vendors.
