Job description

Director of Environmental, Health, Safety & Facilities Maintenance

Department: OperationsDivision: Manufacturing

At Daniel Defense, Only the Best Build the Best

Daniel Defense engineers and manufactures the world's finest weapon systems and accessories. Our mission of Honor God. Defend Freedom is accomplished by serving customers and providing top quality solutions to our military, law enforcement and civilians that are seeking premium firearms for home defense, hunting, and sport shooting.

The Director of Environmental, Health, Safety & Facilities Maintenance leads the strategy, systems, and culture that keep Daniel Defense's people safe and its operations compliant with all applicable federal, state, and local environmental and workplace safety regulations, while also owning the facilities and maintenance function that keeps the plant running reliably. This role carries primary, hands-on responsibility for the company's EHS program - policy, incident prevention, regulatory reporting, and training across all manufacturing and facility operations - and serves as the company's primary point of contact for OSHA, EPA, DOT and related regulatory bodies.

In addition to EHS leadership, this role directs maintenance, reliability, and facilities operations - including TPM deployment, CMMS administration, preventive maintenance, and capital/facility planning - ensuring that safety and operational excellence are treated as inseparable priorities. Given Daniel Defense's status as a federally regulated defense manufacturer, this role also ensures EHS and facilities practices align with ITAR requirements and support the company's ISO 9001 quality management system.

Key Responsibilities:

Environmental, Health & Safety (Primary Focus)

  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve EHS policies, procedures, and management systems across all facilities
  • Lead compliance efforts related to OSHA, EPA, DOT, ANSI, NFPA, and applicable state environmental and safety regulations, including permitting, reporting, and audits
  • Ensure EHS policies, training, and documentation practices support ITAR compliance, including controlled access to technical data within EHS recordkeeping and safe handling of any export-controlled materials or processes
  • Maintain EHS-related documentation, procedures, and audit readiness in alignment with the company's ISO 9001 quality management system, including supporting internal and external audits
  • Partner with Operations leadership to identify and mitigate risk in manufacturing processes, machine operation, chemical handling, and hazardous materials storage
  • Own incident investigation processes, including root cause analysis, corrective action plans, and trend reporting to leadership
  • Build and deliver EHS training programs for employees at all levels, including new hire onboarding and role-specific certifications
  • Manage workers' compensation case coordination in partnership with HR and Payroll
  • Maintain required environmental permits and ensure timely, accurate regulatory filings
  • Lead emergency preparedness planning, including fire safety, chemical spill response, and evacuation protocols
  • Track and report EHS KPIs (incident rates, TRIR, DART, near misses, training completion, audit findings) to executive leadership
  • Build a proactive safety culture consistent with Daniel Defense's mission and values, encouraging shared ownership of safety at every level
  • Supervise EHS staff and coordinate with Operations, Quality, Compliance, and Security teams on cross-functional initiatives
  • Facilities & Maintenance Oversight

  • Own the facilities and maintenance function end to end, providing director-level leadership over plant maintenance, reliability, and facilities operations
  • Lead Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) implementation and sustainment, and drive Lean manufacturing principles across the maintenance organization
  • Improve Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) through reliability engineering and data-driven maintenance
  • Own plant CMMS administration, asset hierarchy, work order processes, and reporting
  • Drive preventive maintenance compliance and implement PM kitting processes that improve technician productivity and schedule adherence
  • Develop and maintain critical spare parts strategies that maximize uptime while optimizing inventory
  • Optimize the balance between internal maintenance resources and contract service providers
  • Provide strategic oversight of facilities, utilities, infrastructure, and capital planning, including managing contractor performance and budgets for facility improvement projects
  • Partner with Manufacturing, Engineering, and Supply Chain to improve equipment reliability and lifecycle performance
  • Integrate EHS priorities into facilities and maintenance planning, capital projects, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Talent Development & Team Leadership

  • Directly lead and develop EHS and maintenance staff, including goal setting, performance management, and career growth planning
  • Build a strong bench across the EHS, facilities, and maintenance organizations to support plant growth
  • Responsible for demonstrating commitment to and leadership of environmental health and safety principles, policies and procedures.
  • Participates in the company's efforts to continuously improve in Safety, 6S, Quality, Delivery and Productivity.
  • Expected to be a contributor to the company standards on high integrity, safety, fair and equitable treatment and a positive work environment
  • Other responsibilities as deemed appropriate or necessary by management.

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • 7+ years of progressive EHS leadership experience, ideally in manufacturing, defense, or a similarly regulated industrial environment
  • Demonstrated experience leading or overseeing a facilities/maintenance function, including TPM, CMMS, PM compliance, and OEE improvement, is strongly preferred
  • Working knowledge of OSHA General Industry standards, EPA regulations, DOT, ANSI, NFPA, and applicable Georgia state requirements
  • Familiarity with ITAR requirements as they intersect with EHS and facilities operations; a background in a defense manufacturing or export-controlled environment is a strong plus
  • Experience supporting ISO 9001 certified quality management systems and audit processes
  • CSP, CIH, ASP, or similar EHS professional certification preferred; Lean Six Sigma, CMRP, or RCM certification a plus
  • Demonstrated experience building or maturing an EHS program, not just maintaining an existing one
  • Strong incident investigation, data analysis, and regulatory reporting skills
  • Excellent cross-functional leadership and communication skills; comfortable partnering with Operations, Quality, Legal, HR, and executive leadership
  • Experience in firearms, aerospace, automotive, medical device, or other precision manufacturing industries is a plus
  • Must be able to respond to on-site emergencies as needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize and work within our Company Values.

  • Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift and carry awkward items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires intermittent standing, walking, sitting and bending throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to work in a manufacturing environment, to include working in and around machinery, exposure to noise and chemicals, lights/lasers, etc.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protection Equipment as required by your position and/or Company policy.

  • Daniel Defense is an Equal Opportunity Employer, including disability and protected veteran status, and promotes a Drug-Free Workplace.
