Job description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks a DIRECTOR-RESEARCH COMP CYBERINFRASTUCTURE-ENT to serve as the leader for research computing cyberinfrastructure services and teams responsible for software development and system engineering in support of UAB research. Identifies, engages, and supports the needs of faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students to ensure projects and publications related to research as successful. Recognizes new advanced research computing resources by engaging in outreach across the university and nationally to give research at UAB a competitive advantage. This position is a member of the UAB IT Research Computing leader group and may partner with peers to complete organizational projects. This position will commit to fostering an environment of heightened security following Information Technology Security Policies and participating in security training, such as Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), on an annual basis.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provides leadership and operational oversight for the UAB Research Computing System. that includes compute platforms, storage systems, research networking, and other associated cyberinfrastructure.
  • Collaborates with enterprise IT colleagues to leverage expertise as needed to support the university's research ecosystem.
  • Leads and/or directs large cyberinfrastructure projects, working across teams and functions as needed.
  • Contribute to developing solutions for protecting both open access and regulated research data, including adherence to all applicable regulations such as HIPAA and FISMA.
  • Assist in annual development and oversight of departmental budget and leads the annual equipment inventory process.
  • Analyzes complex business needs presented by the user community and/or clients and recommends and oversees the development of application solution.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
(Annual Salary:  $126,470  -  $205,515)
Master's degree in Biological or Medical Science, Computer Science, Informatics, or a related field and seven (7) years of related experience in research computing and high performance computing. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
Experience managing research computing services and teams. Advanced knowledge of research computing systems, software, and practices.
