Job description

The Chief Health Informatics Officer (CHIO) is a senior leader responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive informatics strategy to advance clinical care, research, and education. The CHIO leads clinical innovation and digital transformation, ensuring the integration of technology across clinical and clinical research domains. This role serves as a bridge between clinical leadership, IT, analytics, and operational teams, driving improvements in patient outcomes, research capabilities, and organizational efficiency.

Essential Function Job Specific Duties
Lead a comprehensive informatics strategy to advance clinical care.
• Strategic Leadership: Develop and oversee health informatics and digital transformation strategies, aligning with institutional goals for cancer care, academic excellence, research, and education.

• Clinical Systems Optimization: Lead the implementation, optimization, and governance of Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems (EPIC, Cerner), clinical decision support, and interoperability initiatives.
• Innovation & Change Management: Identify opportunities for technology innovation in care delivery, clinical documentation, and research. Drive adoption of digital health tools, AI, and analytics.
• Collaboration: Partner with clinical, research, IT, and operational leaders to ensure alignment and integration of informatics solutions. Serve as a key advisor to clinical executive leadership.
• Governance & Compliance: Oversee informatics governance, change management, and regulatory compliance. Co-chair relevant committees and participate in executive forums.
• Team Leadership: Manage and mentor informatics teams and foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and excellence.
• Performance Analytics: Spearhead analytics initiatives to improve clinical quality, patient safety, and operational efficiency. Lead design of clinical workflows and performance data visualization.
• Education & Outreach: Lead academic fellowship program in informatics, participate in research initiatives, and professional development in informatics. Represent the institution in national forums and partnerships.
• Operational Transformation: Lead informatics integration during mergers, acquisitions, and expansion of services. Ensure successful adoption of technology across new facilities and teams.

Minimum years of Experience 

  • MD Medical Doctor (MD)
  • Board Certification in Clinical Informatics
  • Additional specialty board certification as required by institution

Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in health informatics, clinical leadership, or related roles.
Experience with Epic EHR system required, preferably with Epic implementation experience, data governance, and clinical decision support tools.
Must be eligible for appointment to the Moffitt Cancer Center medical staff
Minimum Skills/Specialized Training Required
• Proven track record in academic medicine, cancer care, or biomedical research environments.
• Demonstrated leadership in operational transformation, mergers/acquisitions, and team management.
• Strategic vision and ability to drive digital transformation.
• Strong collaboration, communication, and executive leadership skills.
• Expertise in project management, analytics, and clinical workflow design.
• Commitment to inclusion, and team empowerment.
• High integrity, compassion, and dedication to patient-centered care.

Preferred Experience: 

MD Medical Doctor (MD) Board Certified in Medical Oncology
