A Day in the Life of the Fiber Splicing Technician I, II, or III:

The Fiber Splicing Technician is responsible for prepping and fusing single-mode and multi-mode fiber optic cables for inside and outside plant construction, performing fiber panel and splice case audits, and placing mid-sheath splices. This position plays a vital role in ensuring quality and timely deliveries of our fiber services to customers.

  • Perform prep and fusion of single-mode or multi-mode fiber optic cables, mainly inside plant, with the ability to learn outside plant.

  • Place and test jumpers in communication cabinets.

  • Properly place mid-sheath splices.

  • Test and troubleshoot fiber using an OTDR, optical power meter, fiber identifier and scope.

  • Perform installation and testing of fiber cross connects.

  • Work with Construction Project Managers and Fiber Design to perform splicing as directed.

  • Provide Fiber Design team with detailed reports of field splicing activity.

  • Train on bucket truck operations with supervision.

  • Perform all work as necessary to conform to quality control guidelines (includes compliance with requirements outlined in applicable regulations such as: OSHA, FCC, NESC and NEC, etc.; as well as following procedures as outlined in the Installation, Technical, Operations, and Safety Manuals, and Employee Handbook).

  • Clean, maintain, stock and secure equipment.

  • Maintain a positive attitude and strong work ethic that can provide high productivity with minimal supervision.

  • Work flexible hours as needed and on-call rotation which may include nights and weekends.

  • Other duties as assigned.

What You Bring to the Table:

  • 1+ year of splicing experience with the ability to properly place a mid-sheath splice.

  • Proficient with construction equipment, hand tools, fusion splicer, OTDR, fiber identifiers and scope.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.

  • Ability to adhere to Local and Federal regulations and company policies.

  • Strong organizational skills are required with the ability to prioritize and organize effectively.

  • Basic computer skills and understanding of Outlook, Excel and Word.

  • Basic understanding of proper safety construction practices.

  • Ability to work flexible hours including nights and weekends, as well as on call rotation.

  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with team members.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment without supervision.

  • Ability to drive company vehicles in a safe and responsible manner.

  • Ability to live within 30 miles, or maximum of 1-hour commute during regular commuting hours from the assigned territory. Territories are defined by management and can be altered at any time.

  • Valid driver's license and auto insurance with a satisfactory driving record.

  • Ability to carry, climb and operate an extension ladder (approx. 28 ft high and 75 pounds).

  • Ability to lift and move up to 100 pounds.

  • Vision abilities include: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perceptions and the ability to adjust focus.

  • Ability to work while standing 50 - 70% of the time.

  • Ability to perform job from high places (i.e. towers and roofs).

  • Ability to be exposed to dust, dirt, noise, insects and cleaning solutions.

  • Ability to work in poorly ventilated during extreme heat.

  • Ability to work outdoors in all kinds of weather and all times of the day or night.

  • Ability to work near power lines and electricity.

  • Ability to work and travel in inclement weather.

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Base Compensation: The base compensation range for this position is $27.00 - $41.00/hr, plus opportunities for benefits. The base pay range represents the low and high end of the hiring range for this job. Actual pay will vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to relevant skills, experience, and capabilities.

  • Fiber Splicing Technician II: $32.00/hr - $36.00/hr

  • Fiber Splicing Technician III: $36.00/hr - $41.00/hr
