Job description

Job Title: Telecom Fiber Optic Splicer Technician

Department: Telecommunications

Reports To: Foreman

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Work Schedule: Four 10-hour days per week & on call for emergencies or outages.

Position Purpose:

The Telecom Fiber Optic Splicer Technician position installs and maintains fiber optic cables as well as provides technical assistance in the design and testing of fiber optics. Responsible for ensuring the integrity and efficiency of our network systems through expertise in splicing techniques and equipment repair.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Splice single mode and ribbon fiber
  • Fusion splice and terminate various types of fiber optic connectors
  • Interpret as-builts and splicing matrices
  • Installation and dressing of fiber optic cabling
  • Perform uni-directional, bi-directional, and power meter testing (OLTS)
  • Troubleshoot fiber optic links and certify fiber optic links
  • Respond to emergency situations to restore service outages
  • Report splicing matrix

Physical Aspects:

  • The physical demands described here are typical of those that must be met by a team-member to successfully perform the essential functions of their job in fiber cable construction.
  • While performing the duties of this job, team-members are regularly required to talk or listen. The team-member is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, and feel; and reach with hands and arms.
  • The team-member is frequently required to perform rigorous physical labor; sit; climb different types of structures (wood, steel, etc.); or balance; and stoop, kneel crouch or crawl. Team-members frequently lift or move up to or in-excess of 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, team-members may frequently be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. Team-members are occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment can be loud. Powerline construction work is performed outside and is subject to diverse weather conditions.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in fiber splicing
  • Valid Driver's License and acceptable driving record
  • Valid DOT Medical Card
  • Ability to work under pressure and in a fast paced and quickly changing environment
  • Ability to travel and work evenings and weekends as needed
  • Ability to work and climb up to 35 feet
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude and strong work ethic
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel and Word)
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Commercial Driver’s License
