Job description

Position Title: Interim IT Director

Location: Washington DC- 5 Days onsite - No relocation

Assignment Type: Long term contract

Pay Rate: $70.00 - $95.00 / Per Hour

Work Schedule: Onsite, Monday - Friday

Benefits: This position is eligible for medical, dental, vision, and 401(k).

Addison Group is partnering with a well-established, mission-driven public policy nonprofit headquartered in Washington, DC to find their next IT Director. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who wants to own technology strategy, cybersecurity, and infrastructure for an organization doing meaningful public-interest work while also being willing to roll up their sleeves alongside a small, close-knit team. If you're a collaborative, passionate technology leader who thrives on both strategic thinking and hands-on problem-solving, this could be a great fit.

What You'll Own

Technology Strategy & Leadership

  • Develop and execute a multiyear technology roadmap aligned with the organization's mission and priorities
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the COO and leadership on technology investments, cybersecurity, data governance, and emerging technology
  • Establish clear, transparent processes for technology decision-making and change management

Team Leadership

  • Lead, coach, and develop the IT team
  • Build an inclusive, collaborative team culture grounded in accountability and continuous learning
  • Support cross-training, documentation, and succession planning

Cybersecurity & Risk Management

  • Lead and continuously improve the organization's cybersecurity program
  • Maintain safeguards including identity and access management, MFA, endpoint protection, and incident response
  • Run security awareness training and manage incident response protocols
  • Test business continuity and disaster recovery plans

Responsible AI & Emerging Technology

  • Lead development of a responsible AI governance framework
  • Set standards for safe, ethical use of AI tools across the organization
  • Vet AI vendors on data privacy, retention, and security practices

Infrastructure & Enterprise Systems

  • Ensure reliability and security of cloud services, networks, devices, and collaboration tools
  • Oversee core enterprise systems (finance, HR, CRM, knowledge management platforms)
  • Manage day-to-day technology operations and support

Budget & Vendor Management

  • Manage the technology operating and capital budget
  • Negotiate vendor contracts and manage technology partners
  • Identify opportunities to reduce unnecessary spend

What We're Looking For

Required:

  • 10+ years of progressive IT experience, including at least 6 years in a managerial role
  • Experience leading technology in a complex organization, spanning several of: strategy, cybersecurity, enterprise systems, infrastructure, budgets, or vendor management
  • Working knowledge of cloud/SaaS environments, identity and access management, and cybersecurity operations
  • Strong communication skills able to translate technical concepts for both technical and non-technical audiences
  • A collaborative, low-ego leadership style with a genuine willingness to be hands-on when needed

Nice to Have:

  • Experience in a nonprofit, public policy, or mission-driven organization
  • Familiarity with formal frameworks like NIST, ITIL, or ISO 27001
  • Experience with AI governance or responsible AI adoption
