Job Description

The Associate Director for Collection Management oversees monographic collection development in social sciences and humanities at the university level working under the direction of the Director of Collections. The Associate Director also engages in a range of collection assessment activities; provides leadership for collection-related initiatives and events; and interacts with library vendors, publishers, and suppliers to achieve an appropriate mix of resources to best serve the user community of the University Libraries. The Liaison Librarian for Social Sciences and History provides outreach to the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences and serves as liaison to selected departments and programs within the college. In the absence of the Director of Collections, the Associate Director oversees operations to ensure continuity of service.

Required Qualifications

-A terminal degree in a field related to the job duties, such as a Masters in Library and/or Information Science (MLS, MLIS, MIS, etc) from an ALA-accredited graduate program
-Comprehensive knowledge of established and emerging acquisition models and best practices.
-Experience providing reference and instructional service to undergraduates, graduate students and faculty
-Experience applying collections management best practices and current trends to a mid-to-large academic or research library collection.
-Broad knowledge of bibliographic sources and electronic databases;
-Demonstrates strong communication skills when engaging with students one-on-one and in group environments.
-Scholarly record consistent with the expectations for library faculty on the continued appointment track at Virginia Tech.
-Works effectively both independently and collaboratively with colleagues, faculty, and staff to achieve organizational goals.

Preferred Qualifications

-Graduate degree in one or more of the liaison fields.
-Experience with library budgeting and budget planning.
-Experience in project management.
-Experience in contract negotiation and/or in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with vendors, consortia, and publishers.
