Digital Hardware Design Engineer information

What does a digital hardware design engineer do?

A Digital Hardware Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing digital electronic circuits and systems, such as microprocessors, FPGAs, and embedded systems. They create schematics, select components, and work with PCB layouts to build efficient and reliable digital hardware. These engineers often collaborate with software developers and other hardware engineers to ensure seamless integration and performance of electronic products. Their work is crucial in industries like telecommunications, computing, automotive, and consumer electronics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a digital hardware design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Digital Hardware Design Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, digital logic design, and proficiency in hardware description languages like VHDL or Verilog, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with EDA tools such as Cadence or Synopsys, and experience with FPGA and ASIC design flows, are highly valuable and sometimes required certifications include IEEE or vendor-specific credentials. Critical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help distinguish top performers in this field. These skills and qualities are crucial for efficiently designing reliable, high-performance digital systems and collaborating within multidisciplinary engineering teams.

What are some common challenges digital hardware design engineers face when working on complex projects?

Digital Hardware Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing tight deadlines while ensuring design accuracy, integrating new technologies with legacy systems, and coordinating with interdisciplinary teams like software developers and PCB layout engineers. Additionally, debugging hardware prototypes and meeting strict power, performance, and size requirements can add complexity. Effective communication and strong problem-solving skills are essential to successfully navigate these challenges and deliver robust hardware solutions.

Teledyne Technologies Incorporated provides enabling technologies for industrial growth markets that require advanced technology and high reliability. These markets include aerospace and defense, factory automation, air and water quality environmental monitoring, electronics design and development, oceanographic research, deepwater oil and gas exploration and production, medical imaging and pharmaceutical research.

We are looking for individuals who thrive on making an impact and want the excitement of being on a team that wins.

Job Description

The Teledyne LeCroy R&D Team is seeking an earlycareer Hardware/Electrical Engineer who is excited to learn, grow, and work handson with cuttingedge electronic design. In this role, you will gain experience across precision analog circuits, highspeed analog design, signal integrity, and advanced mixedsignal systems, all core technologies behind industryleading test and measurement instruments.

This position is ideal for engineers who want to accelerate their technical development while making a real impact. You'll be involved in the full product development cycle: contributing to requirements, collaborating on architecture, designing and testing hardware, and supporting the launch of nextgeneration instrumentation. You'll work with stateoftheart tools, learn from experienced engineers, and see your designs directly influence the direction of Teledyne LeCroy's future products.

If you're curious, motivated, and eager to build technology that pushes performance boundaries, this role offers the opportunity to grow rapidly and contribute meaningfully from day one.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop precision, highspeed, RF analog, and mixedsignal circuitry for nextgeneration probes and oscilloscope acquisition systems.
  • Prepare documentation to support product planning and system architecture.
  • Create schematics and oversee the layout of complex highfrequency PCBs, including ceramic and organic packages.
  • Design test fixtures and implement automated test routines to validate prototypes.
  • Collaborate closely with crossfunctional teams-Marketing, Electrical, Software, Mechanical, and Manufacturing engineers-to transform concepts into marketready products.
  • Provide ongoing support and review product modifications throughout their operational lifecycle.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) with 2+ years of electronic design experience, or
  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) with entrylevel electronic design experience.

Core Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong logical thinking and rapid learning ability, with a genuine drive to expand knowledge.

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of highspeed analog design, signal integrity, transmission lines, RF, and microwave principles.
  • Proficiency in analyzing circuits in both frequency and time domains.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to drive meetings, conduct design reviews, and create clear technical content (drawings, slides, graphs) to explain complex systems/data.
  • Broad knowledge of electronic design, including power supplies, microcontrollers, clocking, transistorlevel design, and PCBA technologies.
  • Experience coordinating across multidisciplinary teams (Mechanical, Software, QA, Manufacturing).
  • Skilled in using test equipment such as digital oscilloscopes and network analyzers; familiar with calibration, automation, and SMD soldering.
  • Competence in design simulation and analysis using tools like Orcad, PSpice, Excel, Ansys, and MATLAB.
  • Ability to script in Python, VB, or similar languages for measurement automation and data analysis.
  • Capable of managing projects or subsystems with attention to schedule, cost, and material requirements.
  • Foundational understanding of digital signal processing theory.
