What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a dieline designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a dieline designer, you need a strong understanding of packaging design principles, precision in layout creation, and proficiency in graphic design, typically backed by a relevant degree or experience. Expertise in Adobe Illustrator, CAD software, and knowledge of print production processes are essential technical requirements. Attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication with clients and production teams are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure accurate, innovative, and manufacturable packaging solutions that meet client specifications and industry standards.

How does a dieline designer typically collaborate with packaging engineers and branding teams during a packaging project?

A dieline designer works closely with packaging engineers to ensure the structural aspects of the design meet production and material requirements, such as fold lines, cut lines, and tolerances. Simultaneously, they collaborate with branding teams to align artwork placement, branding elements, and visual guidelines with the package's physical structure. Regular meetings, feedback loops, and file exchanges are common, ensuring the final dieline supports both manufacturability and brand consistency. Effective communication and understanding of both creative and technical requirements are essential for success.

What is the difference between Dieline vs Packaging Designer?

AspectDielinePackaging Designer
Primary FocusCreating templates and layouts for packagingDesigning the overall look and feel of packaging
Skills & ToolsVector graphics, dieline templates, Adobe IllustratorCreative design, branding, Adobe Creative Suite
Work EnvironmentPre-production, print-ready filesConcept development, client collaboration
Industry UsageManufacturers, print shops, packaging companiesDesign agencies, brands, marketing teams

While a Dieline specializes in creating the templates used for packaging production, a Packaging Designer focuses on the overall aesthetic and branding of the packaging. Both roles often collaborate but serve different stages of the packaging development process.

What are common dieline mistakes?

Common dieline mistakes include incorrect registration, misaligned cut and fold lines, and inconsistent bleed or margin areas. These errors can lead to production issues, so precise measurement and thorough review using design software like Adobe Illustrator or CAD tools are essential for dieline accuracy.

What careers can I do with design?

A career as a dieline designer involves creating templates and layouts for packaging and product designs, requiring skills in graphic design software like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Opportunities include roles in packaging design, branding, and product development, often requiring a strong understanding of printing processes and materials. These positions typically involve collaboration with marketing, product teams, and clients to develop effective visual solutions.

What is a dieline in packaging design?

A dieline is a template used in packaging design that shows where a package will be cut, folded, and glued. It acts as a blueprint, guiding designers to understand the layout, dimensions, and critical areas like safety margins and bleed lines. Dielines ensure that graphics and text are placed correctly, so nothing important is trimmed off during production. They are essential for accurate and efficient manufacturing of boxes, labels, and other packaging materials.

Job description

ABOUT SLATE

At Slate, we're building safe, reliable vehicles that people can afford, personalize and love-and doing it here in the USA as part of our commitment to reindustrialization. The spirit of DIY and customization runs throughout every element of a Slate, because people should have control over how their trucks look, feel, and represent them.

| WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

The Commercial team spends enough time thinking outside the box. We need YOU to think about the box. We are building a world-class portfolio of vehicle accessories along with parts necessary to service your vehicle - and we believe the customer experience starts the moment the box is opened. As our Packaging Engineer, you'll lead the design and development of consumer-facing packaging solutions that are as functional and compelling as the products they contain. From simple polybags to complex multi-use containers that aid DIY installation, you'll craft packaging that supports brand storytelling, and operational efficiency. You'll also establish packaging guidelines (product packaging along with inbound and outbound shipping packaging), validate supplier submissions, and ensure our packaging meets performance and sustainability targets.

| WHAT YOU GET TO DO

  • Design, test, and release consumer-facing packaging for a diverse range of products (interior, exterior, cargo, and utility)

  • Select, test, and release inbound and outbound shipping packaging to be used for shipping multiple products to a single location

  • Develop packaging that balances aesthetics, protection, unboxing experience, and cost

  • Create multi-functional packaging that can serve as part of the product experience-such as install guides or fixtures

  • Define and document packaging standards, test protocols, material specifications, and sustainability goals

  • Review and approve supplier-submitted packaging designs, dielines, and samples

  • Work with product managers, industrial designers, and supply chain teams to align packaging with launch plans and logistics requirements

  • Conduct and/or coordinate ISTA and real-world validation testing (drop, vibration, climate, crush, etc.)

  • Specify packaging solutions across a spectrum-from polybags and cartons to molded trays, foam inserts, and hybrid structures

  • Collaborate with marketing to align packaging design with brand and customer expectations

  • Manage CAD/dieline files and technical documentation; ensure compatibility with supply chain and distribution processes

  • Develop unique packaging that can becomes an integral part of the assembly or aid in accessory or service installation.

  • Develop packaging for cosmetic components requiring various shipping methods (rail, air, truck, final mile).

| WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TEAM

  • BS in Packaging Engineering, Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, or related field

  • 5-10+ years of experience designing packaging for consumer or automotive products

  • Strong knowledge of packaging materials: corrugate, plastics, foams, films, tapes, adhesives, molded pulp, etc.

  • Experience creating packaging that is dual-use or includes installation aids a significant plus

  • Familiarity with industry standards including ISTA, ASTM, and relevant regulatory labeling requirements

  • Experience writing supplier-facing documentation: packaging guidelines, QC criteria, spec sheets

  • Ability to evaluate packaging performance via physical testing and supplier samples

  • CAD/dieline proficiency (e.g., ArtiosCAD, SolidWorks, or similar); Adobe Illustrator a plus

  • Clear communicator and collaborator-able to influence suppliers and internal teams alike

  • Passion for customer experience and brand-driven packaging that supports Slate's mission
