What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a dieline designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a dieline designer, you need a strong understanding of packaging design principles, precision in layout creation, and proficiency in graphic design, typically backed by a relevant degree or experience. Expertise in Adobe Illustrator, CAD software, and knowledge of print production processes are essential technical requirements. Attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication with clients and production teams are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure accurate, innovative, and manufacturable packaging solutions that meet client specifications and industry standards.

How does a dieline designer typically collaborate with packaging engineers and branding teams during a packaging project?

A dieline designer works closely with packaging engineers to ensure the structural aspects of the design meet production and material requirements, such as fold lines, cut lines, and tolerances. Simultaneously, they collaborate with branding teams to align artwork placement, branding elements, and visual guidelines with the package's physical structure. Regular meetings, feedback loops, and file exchanges are common, ensuring the final dieline supports both manufacturability and brand consistency. Effective communication and understanding of both creative and technical requirements are essential for success.

What is the difference between Dieline vs Packaging Designer?

AspectDielinePackaging Designer
Primary FocusCreating templates and layouts for packagingDesigning the overall look and feel of packaging
Skills & ToolsVector graphics, dieline templates, Adobe IllustratorCreative design, branding, Adobe Creative Suite
Work EnvironmentPre-production, print-ready filesConcept development, client collaboration
Industry UsageManufacturers, print shops, packaging companiesDesign agencies, brands, marketing teams

While a Dieline specializes in creating the templates used for packaging production, a Packaging Designer focuses on the overall aesthetic and branding of the packaging. Both roles often collaborate but serve different stages of the packaging development process.

What is a dieline in packaging design?

A dieline is a template used in packaging design that shows where a package will be cut, folded, and glued. It acts as a blueprint, guiding designers to understand the layout, dimensions, and critical areas like safety margins and bleed lines. Dielines ensure that graphics and text are placed correctly, so nothing important is trimmed off during production. They are essential for accurate and efficient manufacturing of boxes, labels, and other packaging materials.

Job description

About Softline Solutions
Softline Solutions is a full-service digital marketing agency based in Southern California that helps businesses grow online by increasing visibility, generating leads, and boosting sales. We build tailored, data-driven campaigns across key digital channels and manage everything from strategy to execution and reporting. The goal is measurable growth, not buzzwords.
About the role
We are seeking a mid-level Brand Systems Designer to serve as the production backbone of the Brand Systems team - the designer who keeps brand standards precise, assets sharp, and guidelines alive across a high volume of work. This role blends brand identity production, commercial design, and multichannel output across print, digital, OOH, and marketing applications. You should be equally comfortable executing logo identities, preparing pre-press art files, producing packaging layouts, presentations, catalogs, brand guidelines, and managing brand templates that stay rigorously onsystem.
This is not a template-fill role. The ideal candidate combines strong production craft with a genuine understanding of brand systems - knowing not just how to follow the standards, but why they exist -and brings the strategic vocabulary to defend decisions alongside an active command of how AI tools are reshaping the brand design process.
What you'll do
Build the Brand Identity Foundation
- Execute logo design and brand identity work across active projects - supporting concept
exploration, producing refinements, and delivering clean final files across all required formats
and lockups
- Architect brand systems end-to-end: define and apply standards for typography, color,
iconography, photography direction, and imagery that scale across print, digital, and
environmental applications
- Own brand guideline development - building documents that are strategic, comprehensive,
and written to be used by designers, partners, and vendors - not filed away
Extend the Brand Across Channels
- Prepare and manage pre-press art files for print production - packaging, catalogs, largeformat,
and collateral - with a working knowledge of print specs, dieline setup, and vendor
handoff requirements
- Design OOH and large-format adaptations - translating brand standards into billboards,
signage, banners, and environmental applications with an understanding of scale and
production requirements
- Support photography and imagery curation - applying established art direction criteria to asset
selection, organization, and formatting for brand consistency
Drive Commercial and Campaign Output
- Produce commercial design work across a mix of digital and print: packaging layouts and
dieline adaptations, marketing collateral, catalog design, presentation design, and campaign
support materials
- Apply brand systems thinking to commercial work - across brand touchpoints and visual
frameworks that feed into print, packaging, campaign layout, paid media, marketing, and email
- Contribute brand strategy copywriting: naming, messaging frameworks, brand voice guides,
and positioning language in partnership with copy and strategy leads
- Stay current with design trends, tools, and emerging formats - including AI-assisted workflows
that improve speed, quality, and creative range
Nice to Have
- Agency, consultancy, or fast-paced in-house experience managing multiple brand identities and
campaigns simultaneously - ideally across franchise, multi-location, or licensed brand
environments
- Exposure to paid media or email production workflows - familiarity with sizing, spec
requirements, and handoff expectations for digital marketing channels
- Experience applying motion design or video tools (After Effects, Premiere, Cinema 4D, Blender,
Keyshot, or equivalent) with a desire to grow in that direction
- Familiarity with Figma for design systems documentation or digital handoff workflows
Qualifications
Experience
- 3-5 years of experience in brand design, graphic design, or a related production-focused
creative role
Skills
- Strong proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop) - produces clean,
production-ready files and knows how to set up work for multiple output formats
- Solid command of typography, color theory, and layout principles - able to apply brand
standards with precision and recognize when something is off-system
- Hands-on experience with packaging design - dieline setup, print spec awareness, and retail
or CPG production context
- Working familiarity with brand guidelines and design standards in a professional context -
you've used them to produce work, not just reviewed them
- Demonstrated range across at least two or three commercial output channels: print, packaging,
OOH, digital media, presentation design, paid media, or marketing collateral
- Familiarity with AI tools in creative workflows: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Pletor, or equivalent
Why This Role
- You're building alongside leadership - your work feeds directly into the Creative Director of
Brand Systems, not into a queue where it loses context or momentum
- Work across a diverse portfolio of brands where craft and print production depth are equally
valued - from identity to packaging to large-format and beyond
- Build production depth and grow toward strategic contribution alongside senior brand design
leadership - this role is positioned to take on greater ownership as the team scales
- Contribute to a fast-moving, multi-channel creative environment where the work is visible, the
impact is measurable, and what you ship helps shape how Softline's brands look, feel, and scale
across every touchpoint
Benefits & Perks:
- Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance
- 401K Retirement Plan
- Paid Vacation Time
- Paid Holidays
The pay range for this role is:
95,000 - 135,000 USD per year (Softline HQ)
