What are typical challenges faced in developmental editing, and how do editors overcome them?

Developmental Editors often encounter challenges such as helping authors address major structural issues, balancing the author's voice with editorial recommendations, and managing tight deadlines. Overcoming these challenges requires clear and constructive feedback, patience, and strong project management skills to keep revisions on track. Editors also rely on regular communication with authors and other team members to ensure everyone is aligned throughout the editing process. Successfully navigating these challenges leads to a more polished and marketable manuscript while maintaining a positive author-editor relationship.

What is a Developmental Editing job?

A Developmental Editing job involves evaluating the structure, content, and overall coherence of a manuscript to improve its clarity, organization, and impact. Developmental editors work closely with authors to refine story arcs, character development, pacing, and thematic consistency. Unlike copy editors, they focus on big-picture elements rather than grammar or syntax. This process is common in book publishing, particularly for fiction and nonfiction manuscripts. The goal is to help authors strengthen their work before it moves to the next stage of editing and publication.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Developmental Editing position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Developmental Editor, you need advanced skills in manuscript evaluation, story structure, and content organization, usually supported by a background in English, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with editorial software such as Microsoft Word with Track Changes, Adobe Acrobat, and project management tools is important, and professional certifications from organizations like the Editorial Freelancers Association are a plus. Excellent communication, collaboration, and diplomacy are essential soft skills when guiding authors through major revisions. These abilities ensure effective manuscript improvement and foster positive relationships with writers and publishing teams.

Job description

Stand Together is a philanthropic community that helps Americaโ€™s boldest changemakers tackle the root causes of our countryโ€™sย biggest problems, from education to the economy, broken communities, and toxic division, among dozens of other pressing issues. We provide our partners with access to resources including funding, thought leadership, a network of peers, and a playbook for applying proven principles to transform lives and society.ย

As anย Editor, Editorial โ€“ Development,ย you will serve as a senior editorial and strategic partner to Development and Fundraising teams. This role is less focused on writing volume and more focused onย expertise, judgment, and elevation โ€” shapingย donorโ€‘facingย work to ensure it is clear, compelling, and strategically sound.ย

Editors develop deepย subjectโ€‘matterย fluency in priority issue areas, embed with key stakeholder groups, and coach writers to strengthen both individual products and overall editorial quality.ย

How You Will Contribute
  • Develop and applyย subjectโ€‘matterย expertiseย across assigned issue areas and funding priorities.ย

  • Serve as an embedded editorial partnerย toย Development and Fundraising teams.ย

  • Edit and elevate drafts produced by writersโ€”strengthening structure, clarity, argumentation, and narrative flow.ย

  • Coach writers through thoughtful feedback that improves both the work and the underlying thinking.ย

  • Ensureย donorโ€‘facingย materials areย accurate, aligned, andย audienceโ€‘appropriateย before reaching senior leaders or external partners.ย

What You Will Bring
  • Significant experienceย editing high-stakes communications for senior leaders, donors, or partners, ideally in philanthropy, nonprofit, mission-driven, or complex stakeholder environments.ย

  • Strong editorial judgment and narrative instincts, paired with comfort working through dense feedback, multiple reviewers, and evolving direction.ย

  • Experience developingย subjectโ€‘matterย expertiseย and applying it to persuasive communications.ย

  • Comfort influencing across teams and working closely with senior leaders.ย

  • Proven ability to coach writers and elevate othersโ€™ workย product.ย

  • Enthusiasm to contribute to Stand Together'sย vision and principled approachย to solving problems, and a commitment to stewardingย our culture, which champions values including transformation and innovation, entrepreneurialism, humility, and respect.
What We Offer
  • Competitive benefits:ย Enjoy a 6% 401(k) match with immediate vesting, flexible time off, comprehensive health and dental plans, plus wellness and mental health support through Peloton and Talkspace.
  • A meaningful career:ย Join a passionate community of over 1,300 employees dedicated to improving lives and driving innovative solutions to complex social challenges.
  • Commitment to growth:ย Thrive in a non-hierarchical environment that empowers employees to discover, develop and apply their unique talents.
  • Competitive compensation:ย Our approach rewards the value you create through competitive salaries and bonus opportunities, allowing you to share in the success you help drive.
Our Values:ย Working for an organization within the Stand Together philanthropic community is different from many other places. The culture is deeply rooted in Principle Based Managementยฎ (PBMยฎ), a framework guided by the principles that drive human progress, such as dignity, openness, and bottom-up empowerment. PBMยฎ empowers employees to be entrepreneurial, to innovate, and to continually drive transformation. ย ย
ย
We believe diversity fuels creativity, broadens knowledge, and helps drive success. ย That is why weโ€™re proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer and strive to treat all employees and applicants with honesty, dignity, and respect.
