Job Summary
The Associate Managing Editor oversees journal editorial and/or production operations for clients' peer reviewed journals from manuscript submission through publication. This role serves as the primary point of contact for client stakeholders and ensures the work of the dedicated support team exceeds expectations for productivity, quality, and schedule adherence. The Associate Managing Editor may supervise one or more Editorial Associates.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide excellent customer service to all external and internal journal stakeholders, including editors, authors, publishers, and colleagues.
  • Ensure contractual requirements and service level agreements for assigned client workflows are met.
  • Oversee journal inboxes and handle escalations.
  • Update and maintain accurate protocols for editorial workflows.
  • Train and manage support staff performing daily peer review, editorial, and/or production tasks.
  • Inform managers of staff errors and/or client feedback immediately and ensure issues that could impact customer satisfaction are resolved rapidly through internal escalation processes.
  • Serve as a proficient user of manuscript management systems, including workflow optimization and the use of system reports to monitor timeliness and other indicators of journal health.
  • Utilize KGL Editorial's cloud based technology as a communication and productivity tool.
  • Proofread and refine correspondence and information sent to journal stakeholders for grammar and clarity, including decision letters and instructions for authors and reviewers.
  • Prepare agendas, complex system reports, other reports, and/or presentations for editorial meetings.
  • Handle invited manuscripts and other special content workflows, including special issues and supplements.
  • Administer social media.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications
  • Minimum of 3 years working in the editorial office of a scholarly journal.
  • Knowledge of scholarly publishing processes and best practices.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with one or more manuscript management systems, such as Editorial Manager, ScholarOne Manuscripts, or eJournal Press.
  • Social media experience.
  • Proficiency with standard office technology, including Microsoft Office, teleconferencing platforms, and SharePoint.
  • BA or BS degree required.

  • Stay informed about industry trends, competitor activities, and changes in the industry landscape.

Physical Requirements
  • General remote office environment (home office) involving intensive use of a high end computer workstation for development and communication activities.
  • Requires the ability to grasp objects utilizing manual dexterity, including hand and finger coordination.
  • Requires periods of prolonged sitting.

Travel Requirements
  • Occasional travel may be required.
