What is a Developer Relations Engineer?

A Developer Relations Engineer, often called a DevRel Engineer, is a professional who acts as a bridge between a company’s technical teams and the broader developer community. Their role involves advocating for developers’ needs, creating technical content, providing feedback to product teams, and supporting developers in using the company’s tools or platforms. They may also speak at conferences, organize events, and help build a strong, engaged community around a product or technology. Ultimately, Developer Relations Engineers help ensure that developers have a positive experience and can successfully use and contribute to the company’s offerings.

How does a Developer Relations Engineer typically collaborate with product and engineering teams?

Developer Relations Engineers act as a bridge between external developer communities and internal teams. They regularly gather feedback from developers using the product and communicate this input to product managers and engineers to help guide feature development and bug fixes. Collaboration often includes attending product meetings, writing technical documentation, and sometimes contributing code or prototypes. This close interaction ensures that the product remains developer-friendly and that the concerns of the community are addressed promptly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Developer Relations Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Developer Relations Engineer, you need a solid background in software development, technical writing, and public speaking, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with APIs, SDKs, documentation platforms, and community engagement tools is typically required. Outstanding communication, empathy, and collaboration skills help you effectively engage and support developer communities. These competencies are crucial for building trust, fostering adoption, and ensuring a positive experience with your company's products.

We're only interested in candidates with genuine technical depth and strong public judgment. Someone who can teach, demo, debug and influence platform direction.

What You'll DoShip a dev-first demand engine
  • Own campaign execution across priority pillars, from conceptasset planlaunchiteration
  • Build programs that serve devs and buyers; credibility up top, clarity in the middle, conversion at the bottom

  • Help teams migrate and modernise safely by demystifying CI and making it clear what good looks like
  • Partner with customers (large, small and OSS) to share technical war stories and value-first storytelling, both for CI and for deeper orchestration
Turn proof into public artifacts
  • Co-create with Content Engineering and Content Writing to turn technical reality into distributable proof
  • Capture and publish dev-grade assets that answer real questions and survive scrutiny

How We Work

  • Autonomously, with agency; you'll join a small team of high-performing ICs, with the ability to drive and influence business impact from the start
  • Async by default, with focused sync for decisions, pairing, and unblock moments
  • We ship iteratively; small releases, tight feedback loops, measurable improvements
  • We document and work in the open; decisions, risks, tradeoffs, fails, the lot
  • We aim for craft and delight, but we don't worship polish over progress
