What Does a Design Manager in Construction Do?

A design manager oversees a design team during a project and typically works in the construction and architecture industries. As a design manager, you may work for specialty companies that contract out to construction firms on a per-project basis. Or, you may spend your career working as an in-house design manager for a construction company or architect firm. Regardless of the location of your job as a design manager, your duties revolve around supervising the design of a building project and include adhering to legislation and codes, eliminating safety and financial risks, and advising clients during development.

How does a Design Manager typically balance creative vision with project deadlines and client expectations?

A Design Manager is responsible for guiding their team's creative direction while ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget. This often means carefully prioritizing tasks, setting clear milestones, and communicating regularly with clients and stakeholders to manage expectations. They serve as a bridge between creative teams and project managers, helping to resolve conflicts and maintain a productive workflow. By fostering open collaboration and providing constructive feedback, Design Managers help ensure both the creative vision and practical project requirements are met.

Job description

MaintainX is the world's leading AI-powered maintenance and asset management platform, serving 13,000+ customers including Duracell, Shell, Cintas, and Brenntag. We raised $150M in Series D funding led by Bessemer Venture Partners and Bain Capital Ventures, bringing our total funding to $254M. We were named to the Forbes 2025 Cloud 100, the definitive ranking of the top 100 private cloud companies in the world.

We're growing fast and hiring the Design leadership to match.

Our users are maintenance technicians, reliability engineers, and operations managers working on factory floors, in processing plants, and across distributed facilities. We're looking for a Product Design Manager to lead a team of product designers who make these complex, high-stakes workflows simple, intuitive, and increasingly AI-powered. You'll set creative direction across your team's product areas, grow designers at different stages of their careers, and partner deeply with Product and Engineering to ensure design is shaping outcomes, not just shipping screens. In this role, you'll be close to the work, close to the people, and accountable for both.

What You'll Do

  • Own design quality across your team's product areas for web and mobile. Guide designers through ambiguity, review work with a sharp eye, and ensure what ships is grounded in real user needs and built to a high standard.
  • Lead and grow a team of 4-6 product designers. Run 1:1s, drive career growth, deliver clear feedback, and build a team culture where people do their best work. You'll be responsible for hiring, performance, and developing the next generation of design talent at MaintainX.
  • Translate product strategy into focused design execution. Help your team understand not just what they're building, but why it matters. Set a clear, directional vision for your team's focus, rooted in customer understanding and business context.
  • Partner closely with Product Managers and Engineering leads. Align on priorities, unblock delivery, and advocate for design quality and user needs in every conversation.
  • Raise the craft bar. Contribute to design critiques, invest in our design system, and ensure consistency and coherence across the experiences your team touches.
  • Lead your team in adopting AI tools and practices to accelerate design work and push the quality and speed of your team's output.

About You

  • 6+ years of product design experience in B2B SaaS or enterprise platforms. You've shipped complex, multi-surface work and you know what good looks like because you've done it yourself.
  • 1-3 years of experience managing product designers. Running 1:1s, giving feedback that changes the work, navigating performance conversations, and helping people grow. You chose management because you're energized by making others better.
  • Strong product thinking and craft judgment. You understand customer problems, business tradeoffs, and how to connect design work to strategy. You don't simplify by removing; you simplify by clarifying.
  • You build trust through how you show up. Consistent, direct, and accountable. You create clarity for your team, resolve friction with partners early, and lead with enough confidence to make decisions and enough humility to change your mind.
  • You care about AI-powered product experiences, both in how your team designs for AI-first workflows and in how they use AI tools to push the quality and speed of their own work.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with frontline, mobile-first, or offline-capable product design
  • Background in industrial, operations, or maintenance-adjacent domains
  • Experience contributing to or scaling a design system
  • Familiarity with designing for AI-powered workflows and data-rich interfaces

What's in it for you:

  • Competitive salary and meaningful equity opportunities.
  • Healthcare, dental, and vision coverage.
  • 401(k) / RRSP enrolment program.
  • Take what you need PTO.
  • A Work Culture where:
    • You'll work alongside folks across the globe that reflect the MaintainX values, Smart Humble Optimist.
    • We believe in meritocracy, where ideas and effort are publicly celebrated.

About us:

Our mission is to deliver one platform for maintenance, repair & operations teams to keep the physical world running. We believe the greatest asset in any organization is the people. That's why we built an intuitive, mobile-first solution to help boost productivity and collaboration across teams and locations.

MaintainX is committed to creating a diverse environment. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, colour, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status.
