Description

 The Quality Control Asphalt Mix Design Technician will work under the direction of the Quality Control Manager in the formulation and implementation of asphalt mix designs/job mix formulas at the asphalt plants.

Key Duties

  • Follow the directions and instructions of the Quality Control Manager.
  • Conduct sampling and testing in accordance with applicable SCDOT, AASHTO, and ASTM standards.
  • Perform daily equipment verifications as instructed by the Quality Control Manager.
  • Perform or assist in performing all necessary equipment calibrations as directed by the Quality Control Manager.
  • Testing of samples in accordance with applicable specifications, QC Plan and Quality Management System requirements.
  • Care and maintenance of all laboratory equipment and inventory.
  • Keeping the laboratory in a neat, clean and orderly fashion.
  • Accurate reporting of test results on their proper forms.
  • Completion of all documentation used to report test results (i.e. - worksheets, sample and test logs, Certificate of Analysis, etc.).
  • Disposal of waste material upon completion of testing.
  • Assist plant personnel during batch production as necessary to insure product quality control objectives are met (process control testing).
  • Communicating batch test results and certifications to plant personnel
  • Assist the Quality Control Manager in meeting compliance reporting requirements timelines as outlined in the QC plans and Quality Management System.
  • Assist other technicians and employees as needed
  • Attend and complete training as required (company, certification, etc.).
  • Other activities as assigned by the quality control manager

Qualification Requirements

  • General.  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each Key Duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • Education and Experience. This position typically is not an entry-level job, as it requires demonstrable previous experience as a Quality Control Asphalt Lab Technician and experience with formulating asphalt mix designs/job mix formulas. 
    • SCDOT HMA Level 2 Job Mix Technician certification.
    • Working proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook.
    • Familiarity with SCDOT, AASHTO, and ASTM specifications for asphalt emulsions, asphalt materials and testing.
    • Possess a working understanding of statistical process control.
    • Ethical professional and behavioral standards.
  • Physical Demands. The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by a Laboratory Technician to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
    • Constant physical effort, including standing, is required during a regular work shift of at least eight hours per day. 
    • Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions.
  • Work Environment. The work environment characteristics described below are representative of those that a Laboratory Technician encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
    • Work is performed predominantly indoors.
    • Work environment periodically exposes the employees to high levels of noise, grease, and dust that is typically associated with a construction project.
