What is a Defense Distributed?

A Defense Distributed job typically involves working with open-source firearm technology, 3D printing, and digital manufacturing. Employees may work on software development, engineering, or research related to decentralized firearm production. The organization focuses on advancing privately made firearms and protecting the right to distribute gun designs. Roles may include coding, hardware development, legal research, or advocacy. Due to the controversial nature of the work, employees often engage with legal and regulatory challenges as well.

What are the main responsibilities of someone working in a Defense Distributed role?

Professionals in a Defense Distributed role are primarily responsible for designing, prototyping, and testing components using advanced manufacturing technologies like 3D printing and CNC machining. Day-to-day tasks often include creating and refining CAD models, ensuring compliance with legal and safety standards, and collaborating with engineers or technicians to optimize designs for production and functionality. You may also be involved in quality assurance processes and documenting project progress. Teamwork is crucial, as you will frequently liaise with cross-functional teams including compliance officers, engineers, and procurement specialists. This collaborative environment provides a unique opportunity to gain experience in cutting-edge manufacturing processes and defense technology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Defense Distributed position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Defense Distributed role, you need a strong background in mechanical or electrical engineering, additive manufacturing, and computer-aided design (CAD). Familiarity with 3D printing software, CNC machinery, and compliance with relevant regulatory standards is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective collaboration are valuable soft skills in this field. These competencies are essential for ensuring the safe, legal, and innovative production of defense-related products within a regulated environment.

Position Summary Blue Yonder Defense Solutions (BYDS) is seeking a Distributed Systems / Integration Architect to lead the design and evolution of our next-generation, enterprise-scale platform. This role will define architectural patterns for distributed computing, event-driven systems, and enterprise integration, ensuring scalability, resilience, and interoperability across a complex ecosystem of internal and external systems. The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise in distributed systems with strong experience in messaging frameworks, integration patterns, and cloud-native architectures, and can translate business requirements into robust, scalable system designs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Architecture Leadership -- define and evolve the reference architecture for distributed, event-driven, and integration-centric systems.
  • Establish architecture principles, standards, and design patterns across engineering teams.
  • Lead system design for high-scale, mission-critical applications.
  • Distributed Systems Design – design systems that can handle high throughput and large-scale data processing, fault tolerance and resiliency, scalability and performance optimization, and eventual consistency and distributed transactions.
  • Enterprise Integration & Messaging – architect solutions based on Enterprise Integration Patterns such as publish/subscribe, message routing and transformation, and event driven workflows. Have a deep understanding of messaging platforms such as Apache Kafka, RabbitMQ, Apache ActiveMQ, etc.
  • Define strategies for message durability and replay, schema evolution and event versioning, dead-letter handling and recovery, etc.
  • API & Service Architecture – define standards for API design and governance (REST, gRPC, asyn APIs), architect service-to-service communication models (synchronous vs. asynchronous), guide implementation of API gateways and service meshes.
  • Cloud-Native & Platform Architecture – design systems leveraging Docker, Kubernetes. Define architecture for multi-region deployments, high availability and disaster recovery, Infrastructure-as-Code using tools like Ansible (preferred) and Terraform.
  • Data Architecture & Flow – design distributed data strategies including Event Sourcing and CQRS patterns, data synchronization across services, distributed data stores and replication.
  • Observability and Reliability Engineering – define system-wide observability strategy using tools such as Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, Jaeger.
  • Establish patterns for distributed tracing and correlation IDs.
  • Security & Compliance Architecture – define secure communication patterns (mTLS, zero-trust architectures), ensure secure integration across distributed services, support compliance requirements (e.g., FedRAMP, DoD standards, SOC2).
  • Cross-Team and Customer Collaboration – partner with engineering, DevOps, and security team both internally and with external customers (very important). Mentor senior engineers and provide architectural guidance. Participate in design reviews and technical decision-making.
Required Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with significant focus on distributed systems architecture.
  • Proven experience designing large-scale, distributed, and event-driven systems.
  • Strong technical understanding of Java based microservices architecture and API gateways.
  • Strong experience design event riven architecture messaging platforms such as Apache Kafka or RabbitMQ.
  • Deep understanding of Enterprise Integration Patterns and Data Flows.
  • Experience with cloud-native platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
  • Strong knowledge of microservices architecture and API design.
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Solid understanding of data architecture in distributed environments.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with designing and integration in Supply chain world.
  • Familiarity with concepts from: Designing Data-Intensive Applications, Enterprise Integration Patterns.
  • Experience in regulated environments (FedRAMP, DoD, defense systems).
