Overview:
The Host / Barista at Canopy by Hilton Deer Valley serves as the primary ambassador of first impressions, seamlessly transitioning between the coffee shop, restaurant entrance, and cashier station. Grounded in a strong Culture of Care, this multi-faceted role combines the warm, welcoming presence of a Host/Hostess with the technical precision of a skilled Barista. Whether crafting artisanal beverages, managing the dining room door, pacing guest seating, or executing accurate retail transactions, this position ensures a smooth, hospitable, and efficient start to the guest experience while strictly adhering to property standard operating procedures (SOPs)
Key Responsibilities:
Hostess & Door Operations:
  • Warmly greet arriving guests, verify dining or event reservations, and guide them to their tables with a welcoming and positive demeanor.
  • Manage the floor layout and table rotation efficiently to ensure balanced pacing for the service team and minimal wait times for guests.
  • Actively engage with guests upon seating to understand their specific dining needs, severe food allergies, or dietary preferences, communicating these details immediately to the assigned Server and culinary team.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and pristine host stand and entry area to ensure a flawless first impression according to brand standards.
  • Provide accurate information regarding property layouts, operation hours, and menu offerings, emphasizing local and regional concepts..
Barista & Coffee Shop Operations:
  • Prepare and serve a full menu of specialty coffee, espresso beverages, teas, and seasonal drinks precisely to brand standards and portion guidelines.
  • Maintain deep product knowledge of coffee blends, regional flavor profiles, and local pastry or food offerings to confidently guide guest selections.
  • Maintain, clean, and calibrate espresso machines, grinders, and coffee shop brewing equipment daily to ensure product consistency and safety.
  • Keep the coffee shop counter, display cases, and condiment stations fully stocked, clean, and organized throughout the shift.
  • Adhere strictly to health and food safety protocols, monitoring expiration dates and product freshness for all cafรฉ inventory.
  • Review operational directions to assist in the physical setup and teardown of event rooms, positioning tables, chairs, linens, and buffets efficiently.
Cashier & Retail Reconciliation
  • Input cafรฉ, coffee shop, and grab-and-go orders accurately into the point-of-sale (POS) system, flagging any specific guest dietary restrictions when ringing up food items.
  • Process guest checks cleanly and handle cash, credit, room charges, and mobile payments efficiently according to standard accounting procedures.
  • Balance and reconcile the cash drawer at the start and end of each shift with absolute financial precision, reporting any discrepancies immediately to management.
  • Monitor retail inventory on display, ensuring items are neatly organized, properly priced, and visually appealing to encourage grab-and-go sales.

Compliance, State Liquor Laws & Safety
  • Adhere strictly to the Utah 100% ID law by verifying physical or approved mobile identification for any guest purchasing retail alcohol or age-restricted items, regardless of appearance.
  • Inspect IDs for court-ordered restrictions before processing any retail alcohol transactions.
  • Safely clear and bus used cafรฉ glassware, plates, and trash to the dishwashing area to keep the coffee shop seating space pristine and hazard-free.
  • Ensure any retail or beverage inventory restricted by state sales hours remains stored in designated, secure, DABS-approved lockups.

Physical Requirements:
  • Continuous standing, walking, and moving across varied floor surfaces throughout an 8-hour shift.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and balance service trays, retail restock boxes, or coffee supplies up to 30 lbs.
  • Manual dexterity to operate espresso machinery, milk frothers, and POS touchscreens precisely.
  • Strong manual dexterity to operate necessary cleaning equipment and handle fragile supplies safely.
  • Flexible scheduling availability required, including early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays based on group bookings and historical property occupancy.
