HR Manager

Troy, Virginia | Full-Time | Exempt | Reports to President | $65,000 - $78,000

About the Role

We are a growing sports company (~50 employees) headquartered in Troy, Virginia, seeking a hands-on HR Manager to serve as the cornerstone of our people function. This is a unique opportunity to build and scale HR infrastructure from the ground up, partnering directly with the President and an HR Business Partner to drive organizational effectiveness as we grow.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced, non-union environment, is comfortable wearing many hats, and brings both tactical execution ability and strategic mindset to every aspect of the HR function.

Key Responsibilities

Talent Acquisition & Full-Cycle Recruiting

  • Manage the full recruiting lifecycle - from job posting and sourcing to offer negotiation and onboarding - for hourly, skilled trade, and professional roles
  • Build relationships with local staffing agencies, trade schools, and community organizations to develop a strong talent pipeline
  • Develop and continuously improve onboarding programs to ensure a positive new hire experience

Payroll Support

  • Support bi-weekly or payroll accurately and on time using Workday
  • Maintain payroll records, process deductions, garnishments, and off-cycle payments as needed
  • Ensure all recorded time is accurate and submitted by required deadlines
  • Support and train management in roles and responsibilities relating to time management in Workday

HR Compliance & Policy

  • Maintain compliance with all applicable federal, Virginia state, and local employment laws (FLSA, FMLA, ADA, EEO, OSHA, etc.)
  • Develop, update, and communicate HR policies, the employee handbook, and standard operating procedures
  • Manage workplace investigations, documentation, and disciplinary processes in partnership with leadership
  • Ensure accurate and timely filing of required government reports (EEO-1, OSHA 300 logs, etc.)

Training & Development

  • Identify training needs across the organization and coordinate delivery of compliance, safety, and skills-based training programs
  • Coordinate and track completion of mandatory training (e.g., harassment prevention, safety certifications)
  • Support managers in developing coaching skills and career development conversations with their teams

Employee Relations

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for employee inquiries, concerns, and conflict resolution
  • Proactively fosters a positive, inclusive, and high-performance workplace culture
  • Conduct stays interviews and support retention strategies; analyze turnover data and recommend interventions
  • Support the performance management cycle including goal setting, mid-year check-ins, and annual reviews

HRIS & Data Management

  • Own and maintain Workday as the system of record for all employee data, time tracking, and HR workflows
  • Generate HR metrics and reports to inform leadership decision-making
  • Continuously improve Workday utilization as the company scales

Qualifications

Required

  • 5+ years of progressive HR experience, ideally in manufacturing, distribution, or a similar operational environment
  • Hands-on experience with Workday (HRIS administration, payroll, or core HCM modules required)
  • Demonstrated experience managing full-cycle recruiting for a diverse range of roles
  • Strong working knowledge of Virginia and federal employment law and HR compliance requirements
  • Proven ability to manage employee relations issues with professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field; will accept relative experience in similar role in lieu of degree.

Preferred

  • Experience supporting a growing company through periods of organizational change or headcount scaling
  • Familiarity with multi-state payroll compliance
  • Previous experience as a sole HR practitioner or HR Manager in a small-to-mid-sized company
