Sunrock Industries is growing. As a family-owned heavy civil contractor, we are seeking an experienced Senior Estimator to join our Raleigh-based team supporting projects across North Carolina.

We specialize in:

  • Mass grading

  • Site development

  • Underground utilities

  • Concrete and curb

  • Aggregate production

  • NCDOT and municipal infrastructure projects

Position Overview

Reporting directly to the Chief Estimator, the Senior Estimator plays a critical leadership role within our preconstruction team. This position is responsible for preparing complete and competitive estimates from conceptual review through final bid submission.

The Senior Estimator supports annual booking and backlog goals while maximizing project profitability and ensuring a smooth transition from estimating to operations.

Key ResponsibilitiesEstimating & Preconstruction (Primary Focus)
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates including labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors, and production rates

  • Review drawings, specifications, geotechnical reports, and bid documents

  • Conduct quantity takeoffs using industry software

  • Identify constructability risks and value engineering opportunities

  • Evaluate DBE participation requirements

  • Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits

  • Develop detailed scopes of work with inclusions and exclusions

  • Analyze historical cost data, crew productivity, and safety considerations

  • Negotiate pricing and scope adjustments

  • Track and follow up on submitted proposals

Process & Team Leadership
  • Lead project handoff meetings with project managers and field teams

  • Participate in post-project reviews

  • Support staff training and mentorship of junior estimators

  • Participate in weekly estimating meetings

  • Maintain estimating procedures and documentation standards

Business Development & Industry Engagement
  • Interface with Owners, Architects, Engineers, vendors, and subcontractors

  • Attend industry events and cultivate client relationships

  • Research future bidding opportunities

Qualifications
  • 10+ years of heavy civil estimating experience

  • Strong background in grading, utilities, concrete, aggregate, and asphalt paving

  • Experience with North Carolina DOT specifications and public bid processes

  • Ability to manage multiple bids simultaneously

  • Strong math, analytical, and problem-solving skills

  • High attention to detail and ability to work under deadline pressure

  • Proficiency in estimating and takeoff software, including:

    • B2W Estimate

    • AGTEK

    • PlanSwift

    • SmartBid

    • Microsoft Excel and Word

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to travel locally to pre-bid meetings and site visits

  • Ability to work extended hours during critical bid periods
