What is a database developer?

A database developer works in an Information Technology (IT) department creating and maintaining databases. You monitor and troubleshoot databases and run debugging processes. Responsibilities can include offering support to other departments or clients, updating systems, advising management on tech solutions and security, and managing machine data. You use computers, cloud data, applications, and programs to improve processes and streamline coding strategies. You may also have duties like presenting information to clients or upper management, and proposing and enacting system updates.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a database developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Database Developer, you need expertise in database design, SQL programming, and data modeling, typically backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with relational database management systems (such as SQL Server, Oracle, or MySQL), ETL tools, and relevant certifications like Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with stakeholders and troubleshoot issues efficiently. These skills ensure the development of robust, scalable, and secure database solutions that support organizational data needs.

What are some common challenges faced by database developers when working on large-scale projects?

Database Developers working on large-scale projects often encounter challenges such as optimizing query performance, ensuring data integrity, and managing database scalability. As databases grow, maintaining efficient indexing, handling concurrent access, and implementing robust backup and recovery strategies become increasingly complex. Collaboration with application developers and system administrators is essential to ensure smooth integration and to address issues related to data migration and security. Staying updated with the latest database technologies and best practices can help mitigate these challenges and contribute to project success.

What is the difference between Database Developer vs Database Administrator?

AspectDatabase DeveloperDatabase Administrator
Primary RoleDesigns, develops, and maintains database systems and applicationsManages, maintains, and secures existing databases
Skills & CertificationsSQL, PL/SQL, database design, programming skillsDatabase management, backup/recovery, security, certifications like Oracle DBA or Microsoft SQL Server
Work EnvironmentDevelopment teams, software projects, coding-focusedIT operations, system administration, troubleshooting
GoalsCreate efficient database solutionsEnsure database availability, performance, and security

While both roles work closely with databases, a Database Developer focuses on creating and optimizing database systems and applications, whereas a Database Administrator manages the ongoing operation, security, and maintenance of existing databases. Understanding these differences helps organizations assign the right responsibilities and professionals for their data needs.

Are database developers still in demand?

Database developers are still in demand as organizations continue to rely on data management and analysis. Skills in SQL, database design, and familiarity with platforms like Oracle, MySQL, or SQL Server are valuable, and demand is expected to grow with increasing data-driven decision-making.

Can I become a database developer with no experience?

Yes, it is possible to become a database developer with no prior experience by learning relevant skills such as SQL, database design, and programming languages like Python or Java. Entry-level positions often require demonstrating knowledge through certifications, projects, or internships, and gaining hands-on experience is essential for career advancement.

About the Role

We are seeking a motivated Database Developer to join our technology team supporting the Residential Mortgage business. You will work alongside experienced engineers to design, develop, and optimize database solutions across Snowflake, Python, and MySQL, powering data warehouse sourcing, reconciliation, and analytics for Residential Mortgage teams. This is a great opportunity to grow across the full data technology stack at the intersection of finance and technology, with growing exposure to cloud data platforms and generative-AI tools and workflows.

Key Responsibilities

Data & Infrastructure

  • Design, build, and maintain data pipelines using Python, Snowflake, and MySQL to load, store, transform, and export data.
  • Support Snowflake infrastructure setup, including virtual warehouse configuration, Snowpipe ingestion, and cost or performance optimization.
  • Ensure data integrity, quality, and performance across source systems and downstream consumers.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve production issues; improve performance, reliability, and observability of data jobs and pipelines.

Application & Database Development

  •  Design, develop, and enhance databases and data models supporting Residential Mortgage data sourcing, mastering, and reconciliation.
  •  Design and optimize SQL schemas, stored procedures, and queries across Snowflake and MySQL environments.

Software Development Lifecycle

  •  Work across the full SDLC covering requirements, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and support.
  •  Implement unit, integration, and data quality tests; apply Test Driven Development where appropriate.
  •  Participate in code reviews and maintain technical documentation such as data models, architecture, and mapping specifications.

Collaboration & Agile Practices

  •  Participate in agile ceremonies such as stand-ups, sprint planning, and retrospectives.
  •  Partner with engineers, data stewards, and business stakeholders to translate data requirements into technical solutions.
  •  Collaborate with cross functional teams during handovers, knowledge transfer, and documentation initiatives.
  •  Work independently and engage in business and client interactions as needed, partnering directly with Residential Mortgage business teams.

Tooling & Productivity

  •  Use Git and Azure DevOps for version control, work tracking, and CI/CD.
  •  Use AI coding tools such as GitHub Copilot and Claude Code to boost productivity while maintaining strong independent coding and debugging skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor''''s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Proficiency in Python, with experience building data pipelines, automation scripts, and or APIs.
  • Strong understanding of SQL and relational database design; hands on experience with Snowflake and MySQL required.
  • Familiarity with Snowflake concepts such as virtual warehouses, clustering, Snowpipe, and Snowpark is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Git, Azure DevOps, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience with, or strong interest in, agile software development practices.
  • Interest in applying generative AI tools to database engineering workflows.
  • Strong problem solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to collaborate across teams.
  • Interest in financial services or mortgage technology is a plus, though not required.
