What does a data network manager do?

A Data Network Manager is responsible for overseeing the design, implementation, and maintenance of an organization's data networks. This includes managing network infrastructure such as routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless systems to ensure reliable and secure data communication. They monitor network performance, troubleshoot issues, and work with IT teams to optimize network efficiency. Additionally, Data Network Managers often establish security protocols and ensure compliance with industry standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data network manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Network Manager, you need strong expertise in network design, administration, and troubleshooting, typically backed by a degree in information technology or computer science. Familiarity with network hardware, firewalls, routing protocols, and certifications like Cisco CCNA/CCNP or CompTIA Network+ is often required. Job Description:

Own the opportunity as a Network Manager and help ensure the mission is never interrupted. At GDIT, we deliver clarity with our cloud solutions and provide meaningful work. Your work will be an important part of transforming our clients for the modern age and help them face any obstacle.

At GDIT, people are our differentiator. As a Network Manager, you will help ensure today is safe and tomorrow is smarter. Our work depends on a Network Manager joining our dynamic team to lead a general Network Engineering organization that spans traditional routing and switching, cloud networking, enterprise network security, visibility, and modern operations. We are looking for a proven people and technical leader who is forward-thinking, excited about emerging technologies, and able to drive delivery across a high-performing team in an environment of customer mission delivery, integrity, and clear communications.

We are looking for someone who brings deep experience across Cisco routing/switching, cloud networking, next-generation firewalls and SASE platforms, network visibility and microsegmentation, and modern monitoring/observability tools - and who thrives on evaluating and adopting new technologies that improve reliability, security, and operational efficiency. If you love leading technical teams, staying ahead of the technology curve, and delivering program milestones, we would love to hear from you!

HOW A NETWORK MANAGER WILL MAKE AN IMPACT:

  • Leads and develops the general Network Engineering team responsible for enterprise routing and switching, cloud networking, network security services (including next-generation firewalls, SASE/SSE, microsegmentation, and related controls), network visibility, and monitoring/observability platforms.
  • Owns overall operational delivery, service health, and continuous improvement across the network domain; establishes priorities, allocates work, and ensures the team meets program milestones, SLAs, and customer expectations.
  • Provides strong people leadership: coaching, performance management, career development, hiring support, and retention of high-performing technical talent; fosters a culture of accountability, technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous learning.
  • Champions a forward-thinking technology strategy; actively evaluates emerging networking, cloud, security, and observability technologies and drives adoption of solutions that improve reliability, security posture, automation, and operational efficiency.
  • Serves as a primary escalation point for complex technical and operational issues across routing/switching, cloud networking, network security, and monitoring domains; coordinates with senior engineers on architecture decisions, major incidents, and high-risk changes.
  • Partners with Program Management, security operations, cloud, infrastructure, and other Service Tower leads to ensure seamless cross-domain integration and end-to-end service delivery.
  • Manages stakeholder relationships with customers and partners; represents the Network Engineering team in operational reviews, architecture discussions, change control forums, and technology roadmap conversations.
  • Drives capacity planning, resource forecasting, and coordination of hardware, software, cloud, and tooling investments in support of network service delivery.
  • Ensures documentation, runbooks, knowledge transfer, monitoring coverage, and operational readiness standards are maintained across the team; supports audit and compliance activities as needed.
  • Promotes automation, infrastructure-as-code mindsets, and modern operational practices that reduce toil and improve consistency across traditional and cloud networking environments.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO SUCCEED:

Required Education: BA/BS or equivalent experience

Required Experience: 5+ years of progressive experience in enterprise network engineering and operations, including people leadership or technical management experience overseeing network engineering teams in a managed services, government, or large enterprise environment

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Core Networking: Strong hands-on and architectural knowledge of Cisco routing and switching (including enterprise campus, data center, and WAN technologies); experience with modern routing protocols, switching fabrics, and network design best practices
  • Cloud Networking: Practical experience with cloud networking constructs across major providers (AWS, Azure, GCP) including VPCs/VNets, transit architectures, hybrid connectivity, and cloud-native networking services
  • Network Security: Working knowledge of next-generation firewalls and SASE platforms (Palo Alto Networks NGFW, Panorama, Strata Cloud Manager, Prisma Access, and/or GlobalProtect); familiarity with microsegmentation (Illumio and/or Gigamon/ExtraHop), policy analysis tools (AlgoSec or equivalent), and WAF technologies (F5 Distributed Cloud or equivalent)
  • Visibility & Monitoring: Experience with enterprise network monitoring and observability platforms such as SolarWinds, ScienceLogic, NetBrain, and/or comparable tools (e.g., ThousandEyes, ExtraHop, Gigamon visibility fabric); ability to drive effective use of these tools for performance, capacity, and fault management
  • Strong understanding of ITIL / ITSM practices, change management, and operational governance
  • Proven track record of evaluating and successfully introducing new networking, cloud, or observability technologies
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical teams through complex transitions, migrations, technology refreshes, or multi-domain network transformations in large enterprise or multi-tenant environments
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills with demonstrated experience delivering briefings and status to senior customer and internal leadership
  • Strong people leadership and coaching skills
  • Proven ability to drive operational excellence and continuous improvement
  • Forward-thinking mindset with genuine enthusiasm for evaluating and adopting new networking, cloud, security, and observability technologies

Certification(s):

  • Must possess Cisco certification (CCNP / CCIE) -or- equivalent depth of experience in routing and switching
  • Must possess Palo Alto Networks certification (PCNSE / PCSAE or higher) -or- equivalent deep platform experience

Security Clearance Level: Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret or higher clearance.
