What is a data governance manager?

Data Governance Managers are professionals responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining an organization's data governance policies and strategies. They ensure data quality, integrity, security, and compliance with relevant regulations. Their work involves collaborating with various departments to establish data standards, oversee data lifecycle management, and address data-related issues. By doing so, they help organizations maximize the value of their data while minimizing risks.

What are some common challenges faced by data governance managers when implementing new policies across an organization?

Data Governance Managers often encounter challenges such as resistance to change from stakeholders, varying data practices across departments, and the need to balance data accessibility with compliance requirements. Building consensus and securing buy-in from leadership and end-users is essential, as is ensuring that policies are clearly communicated and aligned with business goals. Addressing these challenges typically involves strong collaboration, continuous education efforts, and the development of practical, user-friendly governance frameworks.

  • Establish, implement, and enforce enterprise data standards, controls, and governance practices that improve the accuracy, consistency, completeness, timeliness, and trustworthiness of enterprise data.
  • Lead, coach, and develop internal data professionals while providing direction to outsourced resource augmentation teams.
  • Translate business objectives, reporting needs, and operational requirements into scalable data architecture solutions.
  • Develop conceptual, logical, and physical data models that support analytics, integration, operational reporting, and data product development.
  • Guide the design of data platforms, data pipelines, data marts, warehouses, lakehouse patterns, metadata structures, and integration frameworks.
  • Partner with business and technology stakeholders to define data ownership, stewardship responsibilities, data definitions, and governance processes.
  • Support audit, compliance, privacy, and regulatory requirements by ensuring data is appropriately classified, protected, monitored, and traceable.
  • Manage vendor and partner performance to ensure outsourced teams deliver against expected quality, timelines, security standards, and business outcomes.
  • Partner with cloud, infrastructure, security, and business teams to design reliable, secure, scalable, resilient, observable, and cost-aware data solutions.
  • Oversee data integration patterns across source systems, SaaS platforms, cloud services, reporting tools, and downstream consumers.
  • Support modernization of data capabilities, including cloud data platforms, analytics enablement, automation, data cataloguing, and self-service reporting foundations.
  • Ensure production data solutions include appropriate monitoring, support models, documentation, access controls, and operational handoff.
  • Promote a culture of data accountability, transparency, reuse, and continuous improvement.

What You Bring To The Table

  • Strong understanding of enterprise data architecture, data modelling, data integration, data warehousing, data lakehouse patterns, metadata management, and data governance.
  • Experience designing and implementing scalable data platforms, data pipelines, reporting foundations, and analytics-ready data structures.

  • Experience with modern data tools and platforms such as Databricks, Azure Data Lake, Azure Synapse, Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, SQL Server, data cataloguing tools, or comparable technologies.
  • Ability to balance architecture principles with practical delivery constraints, operational support needs, and business timelines.
  • Proven experience leading data teams, technical workstreams, delivery partners, or cross-functional technology initiatives.
  • Experience managing a mixed team model that includes internal employees and outsourced or augmented delivery resources.
  • Demonstrated ability to build processes, standards, dashboards, operating models, controls, and governance routines that improve delivery maturity.
  • Strong prioritization, planning, stakeholder management, and issue resolution skills.
  • Ability to lead through ambiguity, manage competing priorities, and make sound decisions in high-pressure or time-sensitive situations.
  • 7+ years of experience in data architecture, data management, data engineering, analytics, business intelligence, enterprise technology, or related disciplines.
  • 3+ years of experience leading people, technical teams, delivery partners, or complex data initiatives.
  • Experience working with business stakeholders to define data requirements, resolve data quality issues, and improve trust in reporting and analytics.
