What are Data Controllers?

Data Controllers are individuals or organizations responsible for determining how and why personal data is processed. They play a key role in ensuring that data handling complies with relevant data protection laws, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Data Controllers must establish data processing policies, uphold data subject rights, and ensure that third-party processors also comply with regulations. Their responsibilities include collecting, storing, and managing personal data in a secure and lawful manner.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Controller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Controller, you need a strong understanding of data protection regulations, data management practices, and compliance, typically supported by relevant education in law, information management, or a similar field. Familiarity with GDPR, data management platforms, and privacy compliance tools is essential, and certifications such as CIPP/E or CIPM are highly valued.
