What is a dance internship?

A dance internship is a temporary position that allows aspiring dancers to gain practical experience in the dance industry. Interns may work with dance companies, studios, or organizations, assisting with rehearsals, performances, choreography, administration, or event planning. The goal is to provide hands-on learning opportunities, networking, and insight into professional dance environments. Dance internships can help build a resume, develop new skills, and make valuable industry connections.

What are the common responsibilities and learning experiences of a dance intern?

Dance interns typically support both the artistic and administrative sides of a dance organization. Daily tasks may include assisting with rehearsals, helping to coordinate performances, managing costumes and props, and supporting marketing or outreach efforts. Interns often gain valuable insight by shadowing choreographers and company members, participating in company classes, and learning about the logistics of running a dance company. This hands-on experience helps interns develop practical skills, build professional networks, and clarify their career interests within the dance industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a dance intern?

To thrive as a Dance Intern, you need a solid foundation in dance technique, performance, and choreography, generally supported by ongoing formal dance education or training. Familiarity with studio equipment, dance notation software, and video editing tools is often required. Strong teamwork, adaptability, and a willingness to accept feedback are crucial soft skills that help interns grow and collaborate effectively. These skills ensure that interns can contribute meaningfully to rehearsals, learn from professionals, and develop as well-rounded dance artists.

What jobs can you get if you major in a dance internship?

A dance internship can lead to jobs such as professional dancer, dance instructor, choreographer, or performance artist. These roles often require strong technical skills, performance experience, and knowledge of dance styles and techniques.
