Job description

The Harker School, a private TK-12, located in San Jose, CA seeks qualified applicants for a Part-Time/On-Call Custodian. The hours for this position are from 2:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Expected hourly range: $22.00 - $26.00/hour
Position Summary
Maintain cleanliness and interior appearance, health and safety of all assigned school buildings. Includes daily janitorial duties, campus event set-ups, annual school term start-up activities and student vacation cleaning assignments.
Qualifications
  • Communicate in effective verbal English.
  • Hear individuals, groups, telephone and intercom communications, public address announcements, emergency signals, etc.
  • See and read safety notices.
  • Lift and carry items up to 50 lbs to a 4 ft height and up to 25 ft.
  • Push and pull 250 lbs up to 100 feet on a platform-type cargo dolly.
  • Climb on ladders, scaffolds and roofs.
  • Possess effective eye-hand and foot-hand-eye coordination.
  • Tolerate aerobic activities of the job, including:
    • Constant standing, walking, and grasping
    • Frequent crouching, turning/twisting, and bending
    • Occasional sitting, kneeling, driving, climbing, reaching, handling, fingering and throwing

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform regularly scheduled cleaning activities in assigned campus buildings
  • Clean restrooms (daily)
  • Empty common area and restroom trash (daily)
  • Vacuum or sweep office areas (daily)
  • Vacuum or sweep classroom floors per room rotation schedule (daily)
  • Shampoo carpets or buff/wax hard floors (as needed)
  • Change burned-out light bulbs (daily)
  • Report safety issues or building repair needs to the supervisor promptly (as needed)
  • Assist with special event set-ups and strike-downs as directed
  • Set up rooms for special events as directed (daily)
  • Strike special event room set-ups as directed (daily)
  • Manage cleanliness and organization of assigned equipment and storage areas.
  • Keep cleaning equipment in good working condition. Request equipment repairs promptly.
  • Store and use chemicals safely according to Chemical Management Policy.

Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assumes responsibility for related duties as required or assigned.
  • Ensures that the work area is clean, secure and well-maintained

Knowledge, Skill & Ability Requirements
  • Experience in the operation of vacuums, buffers, carpet extractors and other powered floor-cleaning equipment.
  • Understanding of safe handling techniques for related cleaning chemicals.
  • Able to operate building security alarm systems.

No hazardous or significantly unpleasant conditions exist provided safe work practices are followed as prescribed in the Facilities Departments Health and Safety Guidelines. For this position, special attention in the areas of safe lifting techniques, ladder safety, hand and power tool safety, and proper utilization of Personal Protective Equipment are important elements of the employee's work practices in safeguarding himself against injury.
