How much do crystallization jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 3, 2026, the average yearly pay for crystallization in the United States is $104,183.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $92,500.00 and $120,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Crystallization Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Crystallization Specialist, you need a solid background in chemistry or chemical engineering, with expertise in crystallization processes and typically a relevant bachelor's or advanced degree. Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation such as crystallizers, analytical tools like X-ray diffraction (XRD), and process control software is crucial. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure precise process optimization, high-quality crystal production, and effective collaboration within research and manufacturing teams.

What are some common challenges faced by crystallization scientists in scaling up processes from the lab to production scale?

Crystallization scientists often encounter challenges when scaling up from laboratory experiments to full-scale production, such as maintaining crystal quality, controlling particle size distribution, and ensuring reproducibility. Factors like mixing efficiency, temperature gradients, and solvent evaporation rates can behave differently in larger equipment, potentially leading to issues like agglomeration or unwanted polymorphs. Collaborating closely with process engineers and utilizing process analytical technology (PAT) can help address these scaling challenges and optimize the transition from lab to plant.

What are crystallization jobs?

Crystallization jobs involve working in the process of forming solid crystals from a solution, melt, or vapor. Professionals in this field typically work in industries such as pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and food processing, where controlling the size, purity, and shape of crystals is essential. Job roles can include process engineers, research scientists, and laboratory technicians who design, optimize, and monitor crystallization processes. These roles require a good understanding of chemical engineering, material science, and laboratory techniques.

What is the difference between Crystallization vs Chemical Technician?

AspectCrystallizationChemical Technician
Required CredentialsTypically a degree in chemistry or related fieldAssociate's or bachelor's degree in chemistry or chemical engineering
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, research facilities, manufacturing plantsLaboratories, production facilities, industrial settings
Industry UsageResearch, pharmaceuticals, materials scienceManufacturing, quality control, process support

Crystallization involves isolating pure compounds through controlled cooling or evaporation, often in research or manufacturing. Chemical Technicians support these processes by preparing samples, conducting tests, and maintaining equipment. While both roles require chemistry knowledge, crystallization focuses on the process of forming crystals, whereas chemical technicians assist in broader chemical operations.

- Drive continuous improvement in crystal quality, yield, and reproducibility.
- Provide technical leadership in the design, specification, and procurement of new crystal growth equipment.
- Define raw material specifications (purity, morphology, trace impurities) and acceptance criteria.
- Create and maintain engineering drawings, layouts, and tooling designs for CZ furnaces, hot zones, and related hardware.
- Author, review, and maintain work instructions, SOPs, and process documentation.
- Define equipment requirements, performance specifications, and acceptance criteria.
- Collaborate with vendors on the design and customization of furnaces, power supplies, and hot zone components.
- Support installation, commissioning, and qualification of new crystal growth systems.
- Apply working knowledge of RF heating systems and alternative heating approaches appropriate for oxide CZ growth.
- Troubleshoot complex growth and equipment-related issues.
- Perform and interpret crystal characterization.
- Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and manufacturing requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field
