What is a cryogenic engineer?

A Cryogenic Engineer specializes in the design, development, and maintenance of systems that operate at extremely low temperatures, typically below -150°C (-238°F). They work with liquefied gases like nitrogen, oxygen, and helium for applications in industries such as aerospace, healthcare, and energy. Their responsibilities include designing cryogenic storage systems, ensuring safety compliance, and optimizing performance. Cryogenic Engineers often collaborate with scientists and researchers to advance technology in fields like superconductivity and space exploration.

What are some common challenges faced by cryogenic engineers in their daily work?

Cryogenic Engineers often encounter challenges related to maintaining material integrity and system performance at extremely low temperatures, which require close attention to safety and precise engineering. Troubleshooting equipment failures or leaks is another frequent challenge, demanding quick problem-solving and detailed knowledge of cryogenic processes. Collaboration with other engineers, scientists, and technicians is common, especially during the design, installation, and testing phases of projects. Overcoming these challenges requires continuous learning, attention to detail, and effective communication to ensure operational safety and optimal performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cryogenic engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cryogenic Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or chemical engineering, thermodynamics, and materials science, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with cryogenic equipment, CAD software, and safety protocols, as well as certifications in industrial safety or pressure systems, is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you effectively design solutions and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams. These skills are important to ensure the safe, efficient, and innovative development and maintenance of cryogenic systems in industries such as aerospace, energy, and medical technology.

Job description

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.

CHEMICAL PROCESS ENGINEER - STARSHIP LAUNCH SYSTEMS

The Starship launch team is looking for a highly motivated individual to support launch pad fluid systems design and build with a focus on the implementation of cryogenic propellant processing and generation systems for all Starship launch sites, landing sites, test sites, production facilities, etc. Join the team responsible for launching the largest and most powerful rocket known to man!

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design build and operate systems that support critical rocket launches and testing
  • Perform thermofluid analysis and other design tasks associated with gaseous and liquid (including cryogenic liquid) fluid systems
  • Manage the fabrication and installation of fluid systems and other construction projects occurring at the launch and test sites
  • Help SpaceX develop state-of-the-art technologies for all aspects of the production of cryogenic rocket propellants (oxygen and methane)
  • Design, build, and commission air separation, liquefaction, liquified natural gas production, and other cryogenic process equipment
  • Perform balance of plant calculations for cryogenic systems
  • Manage interdisciplinary Engineering projects from concept through design, build, and activation
  • Work closely with operational teams, cooperating to ensure system design is well-understood and easy to operate long-term

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, chemical, or aerospace engineering
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience working with fluid systems in a professional setting (internships qualify)

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Advanced degree in mechanical, aerospace, or chemical engineering
  • Degree in chemical engineering
  • Strong working knowledge of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and process engineering
  • Demonstrated expertise in designing and operating cryogenic fluid systems
  • Experience in the filtration and distillation of liquid gases including liquid air and liquid natural gas
  • Experience with cryogenic systems in maritime environments
  • CAD capability for 3D Modeling (NX, SolidWorks, etc.)
  • Knowledge of engineering standards and best practices
  • Knowledge of safety protocols for handling, storage, and transportation of cryogenic propellants in accordance with industry standards
  • Experience operating and troubleshooting control systems required for remote operations
  • Experience commissioning and or plant operation (liquified natural gas, air separation unit)
