Job description

Summary

Wayland Academy is an independent, coeducational college preparatory boarding and day school founded in 1855. The Head Cross Country Coach serves as the leader of the Academy's Cross Country program and is responsible for developing a competitive, student-centered program that reflects the Academy's mission of Knowledge and Character. As an independent contractor, the Head Coach provides leadership in all aspects of the Cross Country program while promoting integrity, sportsmanship, academic achievement, player development, and community engagement.

Essential Functions
  • Provide overall leadership, organization, planning, and administration of the Cross Country program.
  • Develop a long-term vision aligned with the Academy's mission and athletic philosophy.
  • Plan and supervise practices emphasizing skill development, conditioning, player safety, and sportsmanship.
  • Teach Cross Country fundamentals, advanced strategies, and leadership skills.
  • Monitor academic progress and encourage student success.
  • Develop game plans and oversee all aspects of competition.
  • Recruit, mentor, supervise, and evaluate assistant coaches.
  • Promote participation and assist with student recruitment when appropriate.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, faculty, administration, officials, and the community.
  • Ensure compliance with all WIAA, conference, and Academy policies.
  • Maintain equipment accountability and assist with budget recommendations.
  • Promote athlete health, safety, and well-being.

  • Represent Wayland Academy with professionalism.
  • Support the Academy through admissions and community events as requested.
  • Perform additional coaching-related duties mutually agreed upon in the contract.

Required Education and Experience

  • This position is an independent contractor engagement and is not eligible for employee benefits.
  • Contractor is responsible for all applicable taxes and obligations associated with independent contractor status.
  • Maintain all required certifications throughout the contract period.
  • Successfully complete required background screening before providing services.
