What does a Credit Investigator do?

A Credit Investigator is responsible for evaluating the creditworthiness of individuals or businesses applying for loans or credit. They gather and analyze financial information, verify applicant data, review credit histories, and assess the risk associated with extending credit. Their work helps financial institutions make informed decisions about approving or denying credit applications, reducing the risk of financial loss. Credit Investigators may also communicate directly with applicants to clarify information and ensure all documentation is accurate and complete.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Credit Investigator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Credit Investigator, you need a solid understanding of financial analysis, credit risk assessment, and relevant regulatory standards, often supported by a degree in finance, accounting, or a related field. Familiarity with credit reporting systems, financial databases, and tools like Excel or credit bureau platforms is essential. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help you gather information and present findings clearly. These abilities are vital for accurately assessing creditworthiness, minimizing risk, and supporting sound lending decisions.

What are some common challenges faced by Credit Investigators when verifying applicant information?

Credit Investigators often encounter challenges such as incomplete or inconsistent applicant information, difficulty in verifying employment or income details, and obtaining timely responses from references or institutions. Navigating privacy laws and maintaining compliance with credit reporting regulations adds another layer of complexity. Building strong communication skills and attention to detail are essential for overcoming these obstacles and ensuring accurate credit assessments.

What Is a Credit Investigator?

Credit Investigators examines the credit history of applicants for financial institutions. They scrutinize the information provided by the customer in the loan application, researching past payment records, pulling credit reports, and calculating loan-to-income ratios to determine whether or not to approve the loan. Some companies hire credit investigators to run financial background checks on prospective employees, especially for positions that handle large amounts of money.

Title: ABF Deal Surveillance, Senior Associate

Corporate Title: Senior Associate

Department: Asset Based Finance

Location: Charlotte, NC, Boston, MA, or New York, NY

Job Summary

Barings is seeking an analytical professional to support the Asset-Backed Finance (ABF) platform in a deal-level surveillance role. This role is responsible for active surveillance of asset-backed finance transactions, with a focus on deal-level performance, structural features, and risk identification.

The individual will analyze transaction performance against structural expectations (e.g., triggers, covenants, cash flow dynamics) and proactively identify emerging risks across ABF investments.

This is a hands-on role working closely with investment teams to provide forward-looking insights on transaction health, and ensure timely, accurate, and consistent surveillance across public and private ABF strategies, including residential, consumer, and commercial asset finance and whole loan purchases.

Primary Responsibilities

  • DealLevel Surveillance
    • Monitor ABF transactions at the deal level, evaluating performance relative to structural features (triggers, covenants, credit enhancement, waterfalls)
    • Analyze cash flow dynamics and transaction performance to assess risk of trigger breaches or structural deterioration
    • Identify and escalate deterioration in deal performance, including delinquency trends, loss assumptions, and structural pressure points
    • Track and interpret deal events (e.g., amendments, restructurings, servicer changes)
  • LoanLevel Surveillance & Data
    • Evaluate collateral performance trends (delinquencies, losses, prepayments, concentrations) in the context of deal structure and credit assumptions
    • Validate and challenge loan-level data to ensure accuracy and consistency with expectations
    • Identify performance outliers and translate them into implications at the deal level
  • Surveillance Materials & Reporting
    • Develop concise surveillance summaries highlighting key risks, trends, and forward-looking considerations to help drive investment discussions and portfolio reviews
    • Manage adhoc surveillance requests related to portfolio performance, asset behavior, or transaction events
  • Process & Surveillance Framework
    • Support and enhance surveillance frameworks to ensure consistent, timely, and insightful analysis of transaction performance
    • Contribute to the refinement of risk identification, escalation, and monitoring practices across the ABF platform
    • Identify opportunities to improve data quality, analytical workflows, and transparency of surveillance outputs
  • CrossFunctional Coordination
    • Partner with investment, portfolio management, and risk teams to assess deal performance and support informed decision-making
    • Engage with servicers, trustees, and data providers to obtain, validate, and interpret transaction-level information
    • Support responses to portfolio reviews, risk discussions, and internal inquiries, providing clear, analysis-driven insights

Qualifications

  • 2-5 years of experience in structured credit, securitizations, or asset-backed finance (ABS, RMBS, CLOs, or similar)
  • Experience monitoring transaction performance at the deal level, including triggers, covenants, and structural mechanics
  • Strong understanding of deal structures (waterfalls, credit enhancement, tranche behavior)
  • Ability to analyze collateral trends and assess implications at the transaction level
  • Familiarity with transaction documentation (offering memos, indentures, servicing agreements)
  • Experience identifying and communicating emerging credit risks
  • Experience with servicer or trustee reporting and loan-level datasets
  • Background in asset management, rating agencies, bank securitized products, or structured finance teams preferred
  • Advanced Excel skills; experience with Intex or Bloomberg a plus
  • Comfort preparing recurring reports, dashboards, and presentation materials
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage recurring deliverables and deadlines
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and a collaborative, teamoriented mindset
